Sana (Shih-chi) Chiu

Bio

Dr. Sana Chiu joined the Department of Management & Leadership at the C.T. Bauer College of Business, University of Houston in 2017. Originally from Taiwan, she migrated to the United States in the late 1990s to pursue higher education. She earned her Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the University of Missouri–Columbia, an M.A. in Telecommunications Management from Michigan State University, and completed the prestigious Executive Program in Board Governance at Harvard Business School.

Dr. Chiu's research explores the antecedents, processes, and outcomes of corporate sustainability, stakeholder management, and organizational change/restructuring strategies, with a particular emphasis on strategic leadership and decision-making. Her work has been published in leading journals such as the Academy of Management Annals, Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, Leadership Quarterly, Journal of Business Ethics, and the Journal of Management Studies. Her scholarship has been recognized with multiple Best Paper Prizes and the Elizabeth D. Rockwell Research Award in Ethics and Leadership from the Hobby School of Public Affairs.

Actively engaged in advancing the field, Dr. Chiu serves in several leadership roles. She is the inaugural Chair of the Impact/Outreach Committee and a Representative-at-Large for the Social Issues Management Division of the Academy of Management, representing more than 2,000 members worldwide. She is an Associate Editor of Business & Society (impact factor: 8.1), serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Management, and is a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Strategic Management Society (2023, 2024).

A dedicated educator, Dr. Chiu brings her passion for teaching to undergraduate, MBA, doctoral, and Executive Education programs across Asia and North America. She has been honored as a Teaching Excellence Award Finalist at the University of Houston and received the 2024 Lucile and Leroy Melcher Excellence in Teaching Award at the Bauer College of Business.

Beyond academia, Dr. Chiu is a CFA-certified Sustainability Professional in ESG (Environment, Social, & Governance) investing and holds the FSA Level I Credential from the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), reflecting her commitment to bridging rigorous scholarship with practice and impact in the business community.

  • I am a proud mother of three thriving and energetic boys. When not busy with research or teaching, I enjoy listening to podcasts related to travel, culture, and sustainability topics, as well as watching theatrical and musical performances.
  • I enjoy exploring the world and have visited over 55 countries as of 2025 - I am also a passionate supporter of Sustainable Tourism.
