A student from the Program for Excellence in Selling at the C. T. Bauer College of Business placed in the top three during the Liberty Mutual Southwest Collegiate Sales Competition at the University of Houston.

Management and marketing senior Yvonne Betancourt bested students from eight schools, which required students to compete in a 20-minute role play, selling Liberty Mutual Insurance affinity products.

“We are lucky to have such an amazing partner like Liberty Mutual create an opportunity for our students to practice their sales skills in a competition against some of the best sales programs in the country,” said John Pingel, Stephen Stagner Sales Excellence Institute director of corporate relations. “I truly appreciate how seriously our students take opportunities to represent UH and PES on a national stage.  They’re so passionate to get better each and every day, and never shy away from opportunities to test their skills against the best.”

Betancourt trained with TJ Harris, a senior branch manager with Liberty Mutual, in order to prepare for the competition.

“We did many different scenarios and practice roleplays leading up to the competition,” Betancourt said. “With the help of our partners, faculty and staff, I was prepared to face the judges and what they planned to throw my way.”

She added: “I joined the Program for Excellence in Selling because I love challenging myself to learn new things and get out of my comfort zone. Participating in PES has completely changed the trajectory of my professional and academic career. I have learned about sales, careers and myself. I would have never been able to do this elsewhere.”
