Bauer Faculty Celebrated With UH, College Awards

Recipients Acknowledged for Teaching, Research and Service Efforts

Faculty members at the C. T. Bauer College of Business were recognized recently for their contributions in teaching, research and service.

At the college level, awards were distributed at a luncheon in early April, while UH Teaching Excellence Award winners were honored last week by the Office of the Provost.

“At the Bauer College, our faculty are committed to student success. They are able to make a difference in the classroom, in academia and in the community,” Bauer College Dean Latha Ramchand said.

Associate Professor, Decision & Information Sciences

Funda Sahin

Associate Professor Funda Sahin received the LeRoy and Lucille Melcher Faculty Excellence Award for Service for her efforts as the Ph.D. director for supply chain management, as well as her work with the Decisions Sciences Institute (DSI) over the last five years. Sahin was recently elected as the 2016 president of DSI and currently holds the role of president-elect, helping to enhance the global brand of this leading academic society with over 1,700 members.

Steve Werner

Over the last 22 years, Professor Steve Werner has taught courses at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level in compensation administration, compensation system design, human resource management, organizational power and politics, international human resource management, industrial relations, research methods in management and international management. He has been extremely active in doctoral student and faculty recruiting and served as the Bauer Department of Management Ph.D. coordinator for nearly 10 years, and has represented the college on the university’s Graduate and Professional Studies Council for the past five years. Professionally, he has been a member of the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management’s Executive Committee, serving as the globalization coordinator.

Michael Parks

Associate Professor Michael Parks, who received his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, joined the UH faculty in 1973. He has taught courses in Management Information Systems (MIS) and Quantitative Management Science (QSM), helping over 12,000 Bauer students learn skills like programming logic. Parks was also the founder of the UH Chapter of Management Information Systems Student Organization (MISSO) in the 1980s, which helps position MIS students to succeed by providing educational and networking opportunities.

Paul Povel

Paul Povel

In his courses, Professor Paul Povel shares his research expertise with finance students with a focus on corporate finance and corporate restructurings like bankruptcy, mergers and acquisitions. His publications have appeared in leading academic journals, including The Review of Financial Studies, The Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and The Journal of Law Economics & Organization, among others.

C. T. Bauer Professor of Finance
Kris Jacobs

Kris Jacobs

Ph.D. Director for Finance and Professor Kris Jacobs has been published in several top peer-reviewed academic journals for his work on investment diversification and portfolio choice. He also frequently presents and discusses his research at international finance conferences, including the 2014 meeting of the Western Finance Association, which is considered the top finance conference in the world.

Volkan Muslu

Volkan Muslu

Assistant Professor Volkan Muslu has been published for his work on sell-side analyst research and stock co-movement, as well as pay disclosures and incentive compensation in large European companies. He serves on several academic associations and editorial boards, including the American Accounting Association, the European Accounting Association and the American Finance Association.

Randy Webb

Executive Professor Randy Webb earned a Wayne and Kathryn E. Payne Award for Excellence in Teaching for his work as director of Bauer’s Program for Excellence in Selling (PES) and courses including sales management, key account selling and corporate politics. Webb brings over 28 years of business experience in sales, marketing and senior management with M&M/Mars to the classroom.

Clinical Professor, Marketing & Entrepreneurship
Joel Lebon

Joel Le Bon

Clinical Professor Joel Le Bon teaches courses in Advanced Professional Selling and Customer Relationship Management that covers topics such as marketing strategy and brand management. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he serves as director of executive education for the college’s Sales Excellence Institute.

Mack Rogers

Mack Rogers

Clinical Assistant Professor Mack Rogers joined Bauer as an established member of the Houston business community and as the past president in the Houston chapter of the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters Association. He has taught courses in liability insurance, property insurance, agency management and economics. He received his BBA from Sam Houston State University and is a partner with the Houston-based insurance agency, John L. Wortham & Son LLP.

UH Teaching Excellence Awards

Chet Miller

Chet Miller

Management Professor Chet Miller was honored at the university level during the April 30 Teaching Excellence Awards luncheon celebrating university faculty success across all colleges.

Miller’s contributions to management development for companies like Bank of America, Krispy Kreme and the United States Postal Service lends a depth of experience for students in his courses in the Bauer MBA Leadership Development Certificate program.

Two Bauer students were also recognized with Teaching Excellence Awards for their work as graduate teaching assistants — Yashar Atefi from the Department of Marketing & Entrepreneurship and Ksenia Krylova from the Department of Management.
