    To qualify for this recognition, undergraduate business students must earn a 3.50 minimum grade point average (the grade of S is not counted) on twelve or more semester hours completed during the semester. Students who earn a grade of I (except in a senior honors thesis course), D, F, or U during the semester are excluded from consideration for the Dean's List. Students are recognized by a letter from the Dean.

    Dean's List Reception for Students with a 4.0 Semester GPA

    Students on the Dean's List with a 4.0 semester grade point average who have not yet graduated are invited to a dean's reception and receive a certificate of recognition. In order to encourage timely graduation and recognize academic excellence for part-time students, students who have not yet graduated who complete 9 or more hours in each of the previous two regular semesters and 6 or more hours in summer for a total of 24 semester hours with a 4.0 are also invited to the reception and receive a certificate of recognition.

    The reception for students on the Dean's List from Fall 2016 will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, from 4-5:30 pm, in 328 UCBB (Insperity Center). Students who have received an invitation to this event may RSVP here.

  • Business Writing Evaluation (BWE)

    One of the requirements to file a degree plan in business is clearing a mandatory business writing evaluation (BWE). The BWE is administered as part of a required course GENB 3302. The prerequisite for GENB 3302 and the BWE is successful completion of or concurrent enrollment in ENGL 1304 or equivalent. Each semester the UH Writing Center offers information sessions on how to prepare for the BWE. Criteria for clearing the BWE is determined by the Bauer College faculty through a representative faculty committee. Evaluation of the BWE is provided by the UH Writing Center.

    Students who do not clear the BWE will be required to attend two BWE writing consulting sessions with the UH Writing Center (the limit of two sessions is only for the BWE consultations; students would still have unlimited sessions for general consulting throughout their time as UH students). In the first consulting session, students would have an opportunity to go over their BWE and areas they could improve, along with recommendations for free online resource guides to study. Students would also be given a sample topic for a practice paper. In the second follow-up session the writing consultant would go over the practice paper to see if they improved, and provide additional feedback before a re-test. For students with more serious writing issues, it would be recommended that they take ILAS 3350 Power Writing before they re-test (ILAS 3350 is a non-business course which prepares students on effective business writing, and which may be used in the student's degree plan as an advanced elective). Students are limited to one re-test per semester, and a total of three attempts unless approved by the Office of Undergraduate Business Programs.

  • New STAT 3331 Prerequisites for Fall 2017-Spring 2018

    STAT 3331 has new prerequisites for the Academic Year Fall 2017-Spring 2018 as follows:

    MATH 1313-1314 or alternatives with a grade of C or higher (or credit by exam), MIS 3300 or alternative with a grade of C or higher, and a passing score on an Excel Competency Exam; good academic standing; and pre-business major with advisor approval, declared business major, or if required for a declared minor or special program.

    To enroll in STAT 3331 for Fall 2017, students must meet the following:

    • Have credit for MATH 1313 & MATH 1314 or alternatives with a grade of C or higher (or credit by exam) before the start of the Fall 2017 semester;
    • Have credit for MIS 3300 or alternative (BCIS 1305/1405, which transfers to UH as MIS 1FOS, or a computer literacy course approved by petition as MIS 1FOS) with a grade of C or higher before the start of the Fall 2017 semester; and
    • Be in good academic standing; and a pre-business major with advisor approval, declared business major, or if required for a declared minor or special program.

    To enroll in STAT 3331 for Spring 2018 and in subsequent semesters, students must meet the following:

    • Have credit for MATH 1313 & MATH 1314 or alternatives with a grade of C or higher (or credit by exam) before the start of the Spring 2018 regular semester;
    • Have credit for MIS 3300 or alternative (BCIS 1305/1405, which transfers to UH as MIS 1FOS, or a computer literacy course approved by petition as MIS 1FOS) with a grade of C or higher before the start of the Spring 2018 regular semester; and
    • A grade of Satisfactory of an Excel Competency Exam before the start of the Spring 2018 regular semester; and
    • Be in good academic standing; and a pre-business major with advisor approval, declared business major, or if required for a declared minor or special program.

    Students can meet the Excel Competency Exam requirement in one of the following ways:

    • Have credit for MIS 3300 with a grade of C or higher—the Excel Competency exam is embedded within the course;
    • Students with credit for MIS 1FOS, take the Excel Competency Exam as part of a free non-credit online Blackboard course called MIS 3000, and make a grade of Satisfactory on the Exam. Sign up for MIS 3000 is available starting the first week of the Fall 2017 semester; or
    • An alternative for students with credit for MIS 1FOS is a one-credit hour online lab called MIS 3100 offered in Session 5 of the Fall 2017 semester—the Excel Competency exam is embedded within the course. A grade of Satisfactory in MIS 3100 meets the requirement.

    For additional questions, you can email bba@uh.edu, or consult with a business academic advisor.

  • Excel Competency Exam

    The Excel Competency Exam covers material beyond the basics of Excel required for success in STAT 3331, other advanced level courses in business, and in certain careers. For students who take MIS 3300, the Excel Competency Exam is embedded within the course. Students with transfer credit for BCIS 1305/1405 (awarded as transfer credit at UH as MIS 1FOS), or who have taken an alternative computer literacy course at another school, are required to make a passing score on the Excel Competency Exam as a prerequisite for STAT 3331, and as a degree plan filing requirement for Pre-business majors new to Bauer College effective Fall 2017.

    The Excel Competency Exam is offered through the CASA Testing Center. Free online resources and tutoring services are provided to allow students to prepare for the Excel Competency Exam. These resources and exam dates are provided in a non-credit Blackboard course called MIS 3000. Students are encouraged to prepare for the Excel Competency Exam using the free resources in MIS 3000. New students will learn about the Excel Competency exam and how they can access MIS 3000 during the NSO or ART orientation sessions. Current students and change of majors to business can consult their academic advisor starting in August 2017 (MIS 3000 will not be accessible until that time).

    For students wanted or needing more guidance and support, a one-hour credit Excel lab called MIS 3100 is also an option, and the Excel Competency Exam is embedded within this course. Grading for MIS 3100 is on a Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory basis, and a passing score on the Excel Competency Exam is required for a grade of Satisfactory in the course. Credit may not be received for both MIS 3100 and MIS 3300. MIS 3100 will be offered for the first time during Session 5 in Fall 2017, so will not be accessible until the Fall 2017 semester for enrollment.

    Students who do not initially pass the Excel Competency Exam are allowed to re-take the Excel Competency Exam two more times, for a total of three attempts. After the third attempt, students are required to take either the Excel lab called MIS 3100 or to take MIS 3300, which can count as an advanced business elective. Students may not get credit for both MIS 3100 and MIS 3300.

    For additional questions, you can email bba@uh.edu, or consult with a business academic advisor.
