Bauer College Announces Spring 2018 Bauer in D.C. Fellows
Selected Undergraduate Students Will Experience Life in Nation’s Capital Through Bauer in D.C. Fellowship Program

Five undergraduate students from the C. T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston will spend the spring semester interning in Washington, D.C., through the college’s Bauer in D.C. Fellowship Program.
The students moved to the nation’s capital this week and will take on full-time internships for the next three months in different organizations, including a think tank and several congressional offices.
Bauer in D.C. Fellowship Program administrators selected undergraduates Rachel Kuruvila, Waleed Vohra, Humza Baig, Andrew Teoh and Meera Shahin through a competitive application process to participate as the sixth class of Fellows.
To prepare for the semester, the students, who were selected last May, participated in a series of workshops and orientation sessions led by Bauer Honors Academic Advisor Colleen Davies, who also helped them identify and secure internship placements.
“This is an extremely talented cohort who I’m confident will leave a positive mark on Washington, D.C.,” Davies said. “I know they will represent us well and showcase the talent that Bauer has to offer. My hope is that they take advantage of every opportunity presented, and they learn more about themselves through this experience.”
The students will document their time in D.C. on social media using #BauerinDC18. The college will also share photos and videos from the students once a month this semester on WhereAwesomeHappens.com.
Rachel Kuruvila
Accounting Junior
This semester, Rachel Kuruvila will intern with Congressman Pete Olson, who represents the 22nd District of Texas, where she happens to be a constituent. Olson is a Republican who has served on the U.S. House of Representatives since 2009. By working in his office, Kuruvila says she hopes to gain a behind-the-scenes look at the legislative process.
Waleed Vohra
Management Information Systems Junior
Waleed Vohra will spend the semester as an external/government affairs intern with will be interning with the Cato Institute, a libertarian public policy research organization that has been ranked in the country’s top think tanks. While working there, Vohra says he wants to learn how intensive policy research is conducted and how different politicians use the information generated by think tanks to guide their legislative decisions.
Humza Baig
Management Information Systems Senior
Humza Baig will have the opportunity this semester to see his coursework in action as an intern for the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Office of the Chief Information Officer. The agency is one of the 10 largest local police agencies in the United States and is on the forefront of technological crime fighting advances, from evidence analysis to state-of-the-art information technology.
Andrew Teoh
Accounting and Finance Junior
A native of Hawaii, Andrew Teoh will intern this semester with Representative Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat who has served as the U.S. Representative for the state’s 2nd congressional district since 2013. Teoh says he is eager to witness the legislative process firsthand, help serve his constituents, and live and learn in what he believes is one of the world's most historic cities.
Meera Shahin
Accounting Junior
Meera Shahin will spend her semester as an intern on Capitol Hill, where she will likely provide administrative support to congressional offices and could also have the opportunity to research legislation or assist at press conferences or hearings. Shahin says she is eager to represent Bauer College in the nation’s capital and gain experience in government.
