RED Labs Finds Summer Home in the Texas Medical Center

Micah Thomas and Rakshak Talwar are among the entrepreneurship-minded students involved in the RED Labs startup accelerator program that will host its summer program this year in TMCx.
The University of Houston’s startup accelerator RED Labs will host its summer program this year in TMCx, the new 100,000-square-foot accelerator space launched in late 2014 by the Texas Medical Center, alongside other similar programs in the Houston area.
TMCx, which occupies the old Nabisco cookie factory, is dedicated to life science companies. Supported by the C. T. Bauer College of Business, RED Labs is the university’s coworking space and startup accelerator with a focus on technology. For three months, RED Labs companies will join the Texas Medical Center’s Innovation Institute and Rice University’s OwlSpark accelerators.
“Being in the TMC’s Innovation Institute with other entrepreneurs will help create an environment that we can’t artificially replicate on campus,” RED Labs Director Hesam Panahi said. “The students will be exposed to more of the startup ecosystem, including increased access to mentors and speakers.“
By working with TMCx and OwlSpark, RED Labs can identify common needs among all teams and create customized sessions for them, Panahi said.
“We want to tailor the experience for each RED Labs company based on their needs and the stage of their company,” he added. “In our last class, we had one early stage life sciences company, making it difficult for us to arrange special speaker sessions for just four people. By working with other accelerators and sharing space, we can identify common needs among our teams and setup customized sessions for them.”
Applications for the summer program are now open. The deadline is April 1st. Apply at RED Labs.
