Adrienne Leigh, Houston franchise operator of Murphy Business and Financial Corporation, stopped by Bauer Business Focus recently to discuss the appeal of start-ups.

With a new year comes the opportunity to make a resolution. Some resolve to get healthy or learn a new hobby, but increasing numbers of people will choose to start a new career path by opening their own businesses. According to Adrienne Leigh, Houston franchise operator of Murphy Business and Financial Corporation, there’s no better time to start than now.

“At the beginning of the year, people think about starting the things that they have always wanted to do or the things they know would be good to do,” Leigh said. “Getting out of their corporate world and doing something on their own is part of the American dream, so I think a lot of resolutions along those lines made.”

While many are preparing to start their own businesses from scratch or to operate a franchise, Leigh notes that going from the corporate world to an entrepreneurial endeavor can be challenging. Speaking from experience, says says the change was well worth the risk for her.

“If anyone told me I was going to be an entrepreneur, I would’ve called them a liar and run the opposite direction. I was laid off from the corporate world and when I was exploring my options, I found out about an opportunity that was a good fit, and it’s been a great experience for me.”
