Non-Salary Additional Funding for Faculty

Faculty Development Awards

The purpose of annual faculty development awards is to recognize and reward faculty research, service, publications and teaching excellence, based on student evaluation ratings.

Each year, the total pool of funding available for faculty development awards will be based on the endowment earnings from the Melcher Faculty Development cost center. After evaluating the annual endowment earnings, the deans will determine a reasonable upper bound and lower bound for awards. For FY09 this has been set at $3,500.00 and $500.00.  Endowment income available for awarding will be the balance after the carve-out/set aside of guaranteed cumulative total. Incoming new faculty will be guaranteed $4000.00 for each of their first 3 years. After that they will be awarded through the regular merit review. Departments have the discretion to self-fund a higher level of award.

New visitors will not receive any funding for the first year since they are not required to do any research or any other activity like tenure track faculty. Non-tenured clinical faculty will only be awarded based on their department chair’s recommendation. If a faculty member is on leave status, their monies will be available to them when they return. Faculty members who have funds for travel and professional development through professorships will not be awarded funds through this pool. Individual cases will be considered by the dean.

Departments are responsible for monitoring the individual balances according to the UH policies and procedures.
