Additional Salary for Faculty

Additional Compensation, Work Load and FTE Guidelines for Faculty

Faculty may earn up to 3 months of their 9-month salary plus 20% of their 12-month (annualized) salary or $15,000, whichever is greater, in additional compensation during the fiscal year.  Some additional compensation payments will require prior approval and an Additional Compensation Request form; some will not require prior approval or the form. (see below) The most common additional compensation requests that are approved are related to teaching "for credit" courses. Other interim assignments (assuming the responsibilities of a separate position) may be approved and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

It is the home department’s responsibility to verify allowance availability, and monitor work load for each individual faculty and identifying any potential approval-related issues that the Provost’s Office may want addressed. The Associate Dean must be contacted before making any additional compensation commitments.

Items to consider:

Total assignments cannot exceed accepted teaching load in a given semester

Additional assignments cannot conflict with current schedule.

Additional Compensation Requiring Prior Approval

All additional compensation payments during the fall or spring require prior approval and a completed Additional Compensation Request form.  These assignments must be pre- approved by the Chairperson, Dean and Provost. Examples would be for, but not limited to, teaching classes, course development and administrative duties.  Additional compensation earned during the fall or spring is subtracted from the 20% or $15,000 (whichever is greater) allowance first.  Once this allowance is exhausted, the 3-month pool is used, reducing the amount available for the summer.

Any unearned balance remaining on the 20% or $15000.00 not taken during the fall or spring semester can be added to summer but requires prior approval from the Provost.

*In addition to a standard ePAR, an Additional Compensation Request form and the Additional Comp. Calculator must also be completed. These forms must be completed before the assignment begins.

Additional Compensation Not Requiring Prior Approval

All 9-month faculty are allowed to earn up to 3 months (or whatever balance is remaining of this allowance) of their 12-month salary in the summer as additional compensation and no prior approval is required from the Provost.

*There is no need to complete an Additional Compensation Request form during summer. Only the Additional Comp Calculator must be attached to the ePAR.

Faculty Awards

Faculty awards are not considered to be additional compensation and are not included in additional compensation calculations.  Payment (ePARs) can only be processed at the end of the assignment, in one lump sum payment or at the end of each month if stretched over more than one month.  No exceptions to this policy will be allowed. (Cannot be paid in advance)

All questions regarding additional compensation issues should be addressed to the Associate Dean.
