Tuition Waivers
Non-resident tuition waivers are available for students hired as Instructional Assistants, Teaching Fellows, Teaching Assistants, Research Assistants and Academic Support Assistants. These waivers require the student to be enrolled in at least 9 hours of graduate courses or 12 hours of undergraduate courses during the long semester(s) of their employment and 6 hours of courses in the summer. Course load exceptions can be made during the final semester before graduation. If the student is not a business major, then the enrolling college and BCB both need to sign the waiver. The students must be working in a job related to their specific degrees.
It is the responsibility of the hiring unit to know and adhere to all related University policies and procedures. All tuition waivers must be in compliance with the SAM, MAPP and the following College guidelines.
- Tuition waiver form requires signatures of the faculty member they will be assisting or principal investigator or supervisor and the department chair, and must be obtained prior to submitting the form to the Dean’s office.
- Teaching Fellows, and Teaching Assistants are required to be enrolled in 9 credit hours for the long semesters and 6 hours in summer. Academic Support Assistants are required to be enrolled in 12 credit hours for the long semesters and 6 hours in summer.
- A copy of fee bill or proof of enrollment for the appropriate number of hours must be attached. Courses taken must be applicable towards the student’s degree objective.
- All students must be employed in a position for 4.5 months or longer. Assignment must start prior to the 12th class day.
- MBA students with no specific concentration must get the MBA Director’s signature.
- Undergraduate students with undecided majors must get their advisors to approve the waiver.
- If a Bauer College student is working for another college, then a brief job description must be attached by the supervisor to verify that job duties are related to degree objectives and get the Dean of professional and graduate studies to sign the General Petition for any exception.
- Waiver will be revoked if student’s hours of enrollment drops to less than required or employment is terminated. At which time student will be responsible for a full tuition.
IMPORTANT: GPS reviews non-resident employment waivers for students directly employed in a graduate appointment. All other students who receive eligibility for the employment non-resident tuition waiver through a spouse or undergraduate ASA must complete the Non-resident Tuition Exemption form and submit directly to the Bursar’s office.
A non-resident teacher, professor, or teaching/research assistant of a Texas institution of higher education and the spouse and children of the teacher, professor, teaching/research assistant are entitled to resident tuition and fees (Texas Education Code 54.063 and 54.059) if:
- The student is employed at least .50 FTE;
- The student is employed in a position with academic duties in an academic program, whether teaching or research;
- The student is employed in a position that relates to their degree program;
- The student is enrolled full-time on the official census date through the last official class day (subject to revision by the Coordinating Board). Exceptions to enrollment requirements may be granted with approval of the Dean of college of the student assistant’s major.
- The student is employed on or before the official census date of the relevant term;
- The student is employed through the last official class day. Exceptions to this provisions maybe granted if all degree requirements have been completed and the employment conditions, therefore, are met, with approval of the Dean and the college business administrator of the college of the student assistant’s major; and,
- Eligibility for waivers during any or all summer sessions is dependent upon employment of at least .50 FTE for at least one summer session. The student must be enrolled full time.
Students who have non-resident tuition added to their accounts as a result of non-eligibility must pay non-resident tuition within the time period allowed or they will not receive credit for the semester.
Students must maintain at least a 3.0 gpa in order to continue to receive a tuition waiver.
