The Telephone Network

• In most countries, the telephone industry is either government owned monopolies or private companies regulated by the government

• Deregulation means that the common carriers can enter into other types of businesses instead offering only communication circuits.

In many countries, PTTs (postal telephone and telegraph services) used to be government monopolies who owned, controlled, and sold voice and data communications services.

• The situation is rapidly changing launching a global competition amongst the existing and emerging voice and data communications providers
