The handle is somewhat oval in cross section. It was not turned on a lathe and appears hand carved. It is crooked and the body is offset to the right of the center line. There are numerous deep cuts on the right side of the body where the mallet mis-struck the chisel and was scratched by the sharp chisel corner or the work piece. There is no indication that this tool was ever used as a potato masher. It is a carver's tool.

The handle diameter varies 4% from:

  • 19.4mm to 20.2mm (0.76 inches to 0.79 inches)
  • at 6.5" above the base

There is a significant flat spot on both sides of the body in the lowest 2.5 inches. It is about 3/4 inch across and shows the most hammering wear.

The body diameter varies 1.4% (mostly because of the flat part of the face) from:

  • 630mm to 643mm (2.48 inches to 2.53 inches)
  • at 1.0" above the base bottom

The mallet handle is inserted in a hole in the small end of the body. The sharp topped hole where the handle is inserted is irregularly chipped.

The mallet fits perfectly in my hand and feels stable and well balanced in all the directions.
    • resting my thumb at the wider part of the neck prevents the body from sliding backwards
    • the oval-shaped handle prevents the mallet from twisting in my hand
    • the flared end pressing on my palm prevents the mallet from moving forward
