FTP Setup Instructions

  1. Down load FileZilla (the FTP program) from here.

    Click the green "Download Now" from sourceforge

    CAUTION:

    DECLINE THE ADD-ONS (you will say "DECLINE" TWICE) to avoid the sourceforge automatic add-ons

  2. Once installed, run the program
  3. To setup your ftp connection:

    1. Click the "File" button in the upper left corner
    2. Click on "Site Manager"
    3. Click "New Site" button (on the left side)
    4. In the "Host" box type: auckland.bauer.uh.edu
    5. In the "Protocol" drop down menu, choose: "FTP: File Transfer Protocol"
    6. In the "Encryption" drop down menu, choose: "Only use plain FTP (insecure)"
    7. Click "Logon Type" drop down menu and choose "NORMAL"
    8. In the "User" textbox, type your userid: glxxxx
    9. In the "Password" textbox, type your 9 character password: AAAddaaaA
    10. Click the "Transfer Settings" tab, then under "Transfer Mode" click "ACTIVE"

      You should be ready to connect now.

    11. Click the "Connect" button -- it should connect

  4. The current directory on your local machine will appear in the left side panels
    You can navigate around your local machine using picking drives or directories

  5. Your server directory will appear in the right side panels.
    You can navigate around your sub directories on your account.
    You CANNOT get outside your directory space on the server.

  6. To move a file from the client (your PC) to the server, in the left side panel right click on the file and then click "Upload"

  7. To move a file from the the server to the client (your PC), in the right side panel right click on the file and then click "Download"

  8. On either panel you can right click the mouse and make new directories, delete files, rename files, etc.

  9. You access your account content over the web by using:

    http://auckland.bauer.uh.edu/students/glxxxx

    In the above the "glxxxx" is you userid that you were issued. e.g., "gl1234". It starts with lower case "GL" followed by 4 digits.

    The default homepage in named "index.htm" (i.e., if you use the address above WITHOUT specifying a web page, the server looks for an index.htm page on the account. If it doesn't find one you will get a 404 error. So make an index.htm page and upload it to your site.

    Note: the address does NOT use the "www." prefix in the address.
