The Future: Frame Relay and/or ATM?
Frame Relay is a newer packet switching technology that transmits data faster than the currently popular X.25 standard.
It defines a data link layer protocol (how frames of data are assembled and routed through a data network)
negotiates committed information rates and maximum allowable rates.
ATM is similar to frame delay except that
- 1. it uses fixed length packets (more suitable for voice transmissions)
- 2. ATM is scaleable (it is easy to multiplex ATM circuits into faster ATM circuits)
