COURSE OBJECTIVE
The main purpose of this course is to introduce students to the important issues of International Business. We will look at International Business in two ways. First, how doing business in other countries differs from doing business in the United States, and second how the management of multi-national organizations differs from domestic organizations. We will study topics including globalization, country differences, culture, international trade theories, trading systems, foreign direct investment, monetary systems, global strategies, entry-modes, global marketing, and global human resource management. Students will also learn presentation skills, and experience international business and culture first hand with trip to Prague, Czech Republic..

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
The Center for Students with Disabilities provides a wide variety of academic support services to all currently-enrolled UH students who have any type of mental or physical disability of either a temporary of permanent nature. These services include assistance with course accommodations, adaptive equipment, individualized exam administration, taped textbooks, wheelchair repair, library needs, registration, handicapped parking, accessible housing and transportation, as well as many other needs. If you feel you may need assistance of this nature, you should call the Center at 743-5400. In addition, you should let me know about any special needs as soon as possible.

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY
The CBA is proud of the high quality of our students and our academic programs. We recognize the importance of academic honesty in maintaining our high standards. In the rare situation where there may be a breach of academic honesty, we would appreciate your assistance in bringing the situation to our attention. We will, of course, take appropriate action in all cases. If you have questions about the Academic Honesty Policy, it is included in the 2000-2001 Student Handbook. The staff of the Dean of Students Office are also available to answer questions.

COURSE EVALUATIONS
The CBA has a policy that requires all of its instructors to be evaluated by their students. The results of these evaluations are important to provide feedback to instructors on how their performance can be improved. In addition, these evaluations are carefully considered in promotion, salary adjustment, and other important decisions. We openly encourage students to provide feedback to the instructors and the CBA through the evaluation process.

TERM PAPER
The term paper is due on the last day of Summer I classes. Papers may be turned in early. Late papers will be accepted through the last day of Summer I finals with one full grade off for everyday late. The paper should be no more than 20 and no less than 10 double spaced pages with one inch margins. The paper is worth 30 points. Choose from 1 of the following to be the topic of your paper:

    1. Human Resource Management in Central and Eastern Europe.
    2. Business Strategy in Central and Eastern Europe.
    3. Marketing in Central and Eastern Europe.
    4. Business Environment of Central and Eastern Europe.
With consent of the instructor you may focus on Western Europe, Latin America, or Asia instead of Central and Eastern Europe. The paper should be based on independently researched published sources as well as your own experiences on the study abroad trip if applicable. Students are to work independently on the term paper. An A paper will: 1) meet the stated requirements; 2) be relevant to the class; 3) be well written; 4) be well organized; 5) be free of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors; 6) be well referenced when applicable, 7) will contribute new ideas rather than just rehash the read material and 8) will satisfactorily cover the topic.

You should reference the source anytime you state a fact that is not common knowledge, or idea that is not your own. The references in the paper should be in a generally accepted format. For example:

Gerhart, B., and Milkovich, G.T. 1990 Organizational differences in managerial compensation and financial performance. Academy of Management Journal, 33, 663-691.

Gomez-Mejia, L.R., and Balkin, D.B. 1992 Compensation, Organizational Strategy, and Firm Performance. Cincinnati, Ohio: South-Western Publishing Co.

CONTRIBUTION
The Prague trip is a vital part of this course. Students are expected to positively represent the University of Houston, to participate in all excursions and seminars (unless they are deemed optional), and to attend all classes. The largest portion of the contribution grade will be based on students' behaviors on the Prague trip. Contribution is worth 50 points.

GROUP PRESENTATIONS
On Monday, June 11th students will form presentation groups of 5-6 students per group. Students will be assigned a topic that they will present as a group on Tuesday, June 19th. Presentations are worth 20 points each. Half of the points are a group score based on content and overall timeliness. The remaining ten points are an individual score based on each student's presentation style, clarity and professionalism. Presentations will be graded using the group presentation grading form reproduced below. These formal presentations should be between 15-20 minutes and are expected to include professional quality presentation materials and appropriate dress. The detail of required content will be given when I assign the topics on June 11th, but topics will relate to some area of management as it is practiced in Central and Eastern Europe.
