Clickers at Bauer College
A number of core and upper level classes at Bauer College will be using clickers for in-class activities. Students are required to make a one-time purchase of a clicker before the start of the class. Details about what clickers are, what classes are using them, how they will be used, which model to buy, and where to buy them are provided here. Click on each link to read more.
Bauer College uses only TurningPoint clickers. Do not buy any other brand! |

What is a clicker?
A Clicker is an in-class electronic polling device that looks like a TV remote. Colleges and universities are increasingly using clickers as a means of making the classroom more interactive and engaging for students.
Some of the ways in which you will use it include:
- To take a quiz and get instant grades
- To participate in opinion polls and surveys
- To engage in competitive games and debates
- To register your attendance
Clickers provide instant feedback on your comprehension of concepts covered in the lecture – no more waiting for quiz results to come in.

Where can I buy the clicker? Which model should I buy?
If you are enrolled in a class that uses clickers, you must purchase TurningPoint’s ResponseCard RF with an LCD screen. These clickers are available on campus at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore at the University Center for $40 plus tax. Keep your receipt safe. If your clicker does not work, you may need it to get a replacement.
Note: Book loans can be used to purchase clickers.
If you chose to buy your clicker online, please make sure to select the correct model, and order well ahead of semester start time so you have the clicker with you on the first day of class. You may also buy a used clicker from another student who no longer needs it.
You need to buy only one clicker. It will work in all classes that use clickers. When you no longer need your clicker (such as when you graduate) you can resell it or gift it to friends.

How will my instructors know I participated with my clicker?
You need to register your clicker so that it becomes uniquely associated with you. This ensures that you get the necessary credit for participation in class. The link for registering your clicker will be provided on the course home page on Blackboard.Registration requires you to enter the device ID - the six digit alphanumeric code or 6 digit numeric code - located below the barcode on the back of the clicker. There is no letter “O” or “I” in the ID.
Please register the clicker in ALL your classes that use clickers.
-
Does the Bauer Code of Ethics govern clickers?
Absolutely! If you ask a friend to take your clicker to class and participate on your behalf, or if you do the same for a friend, you and your friend are in violation of the university’s Academic Honesty Policy. Both of you will face the same consequences as any other act of academic dishonesty, including possibly, an F in the course.
Ultimately, Bauer’s reputation depends on your actions. Academic dishonesty not only undermines your learning, but devalues the Bauer brand as well. You need to make sure your actions are in keeping with the Bauer Code of Ethics.

Where can I read more about how to use a clicker?
Your instructors will provide a number of useful documents in Blackboard that guide you on how to participate with clickers. It will help you immensely if you read them before using clickers in class. You can also view a short tutorial by clicking on this link below:

Where can I get help if my clicker fails?
In general, your clicker comes with a one-year warranty from the day of your clicker purchase. If your clicker stops working during the warranty period, visit the Faculty Development and Instructional Support (FDIS) office for help.
Office Location: Room 54B in the basement of the M.D. Anderson Library - come through the back entrance facing the University Center (UC). There is a sign outside the office that says Educational Technology and University Outreach.
Office Visit Hours: 10:00am - 4:00pm (Monday - Friday)
Phone: 832-842-2126 or 832-842-2145
If you encounter problems with your RF-LCD clicker (non-battery issues) even after the one-year warranty period has expired, you can still receive a replacement if it appears to be malfunctioning.
