Grade Distribution (FINA 4360)

All final scores (FS) will be standardized, that is, (FS - mean of FS)/(SD of FS). Then, grades will be assigned according to the following curve:

Higher than 1.0*SD

A (approximately 15%)

Higher than 0.2*SD

B (approximately 42%)

Higher than -0.85*SD

C (approximately 80%)

Higher than -1.4*SD

D (approximately 92%)

Less than -1.4*SD

F

This curve is a bit skewed towards the right (generous) side of the normal curve.

  • Examples:
In the Spring 98 semester, using the above described curve, students received the following grades:

Overall Weighted Score -as a percentage-

    Letter Grade

    77% to 100%

    A

    70% to 77%

    B

    55% to 70%

    C

    50% to 55%

    D

    Less than 50%

    F

In the Spring 02 semester, using the above described curve, students received the following grades:

Overall Weighted Score -as a percentage-

    Letter Grade

    81% to 100%

    A

    70% to 81%

    B

    60% to 70%

    C

    50% to 60%

    D

    Less than 50%

    F

In the Spring 13 semester, using the above described curve, students received the following grades:

Overall Weighted Score -as a percentage-

    Letter Grade

    75% to 100%

    A

    65% to 75%

    B

    56% to 65%

    C

    46% to 56%

    D

    Less than 46%

    F

In general, if your weighted score is above 80%, you have a very good chance of getting an A. Similarly, if your weighted score is below 50%, you are close to an F.
