Exams (FINA 4360)
Exams are open book and, therefore, all questions involve some thinking. No
memorization of formulas or definitions is needed. Each midterm is
divided into two parts: problems (40 points) and a recent news article (20 points).
In the first part of each exam, there will be four problems. The second part
involves the interpretation of a financial news clip. I do not pull
any surprises during exams. That is, the best way to prepare for the exam is
to go over examples and exercises on the book, and to prepare for the cases
that will be discussed in class.
The class before each exam, I'll make available in this page a current newspaper article.
You should come to the exam with the news article read. It is recommended that,
before each exam, you try to relate the news article to the relevant chapters
in the book. Try to think about potential questions. They will be no much different from the questions written for the cases.
The answers to the article questions are simple. They do not involve writing more than two sentences. In general, if you write more than three sentences,
you are writing too much.
The exam is open book (and news article) only. No other material is allowed. You can write,
however, anything you want in the book. Do not paste solutions to old exams, solutions
to homework, etc. If you think the old exam solutions are important, write them. Again,
do not paste anything to the book. It will be considered cheating. Also, phones and any noise-making electronic instrument should be turned off
during the exam. Only the book, a copy of the article, and a calculator are allowed to be on your desk.
More on the exams:
The first exam covers IFM chapters 1 to 9.
The second exam covers IFM chapters 9 to 12.
The third exam covers IFM chapters 13 to 21 (except 19).
Yes, the final exam is comprehensive.
As usual, unless stated otherwise, you are responsible for everything we
cover in class and everything in your book.

Note: The practice exams are available in PDF format. You'll need the
Acrobat Reader to read them and
print them (it took me less than five minutes to download it and install it in
my hard drive). All PCs in RICS and in the Anderson Library have
the Acrobat Reader installed.
