Students from other universities who temporarily (during the summer) take business courses at the University of Houston with the intention of transferring back to their home institution are called Summer Visiting (or Summer Transient) students.
Summer Visiting students may enroll in undergraduate business courses during the open enrollment period as long as a desired course is open, they meet the course prerequisites, and have permission from their academic advisor at their home school and from the Office of Undergraduate Business Programs.
Steps to Enrollment for Prospective Summer Visiting Students
Check the UH class schedule online to make sure the course is available and open. Future semester class schedules are made live online approximately two to four weeks before UH registration for a particular semester begins - check the UH Academic Calendar for more information.
(NOTE: Visiting students wishing to take accounting courses must take them at the 5000-level, which includes an additional fee because these courses are part of the Certificate in Accountancy Program.)
(NOTE: Students who check availability before the open enrollment period begins may find that their desired course fills up during the initial enrollment appointment period. Remember, priority goes to degree seeking students, and students cannot be added to closed (full) courses.)
SPECIAL NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT BAUER COLLEGE IF YOU ARE INQUIRING ABOUT NON-BUSINESS COURSEWORK, EVEN IF YOU ARE A BUSINESS STUDENT AT ANOTHER COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY. FOR NON-BUSINESS COURSES, YOU MUST CONTACT THE UH DEPARMENT IN WHICH THOSE COURSES ARE LOCATED.
If you are interested in taking business courses as a summer visiting student, contact the Office of Undergraduate Business Programs at firstname.lastname@example.org to indicate that you are a Summer Visiting student and list which business courses you are interested in taking.
Ask your academic advisor from your home school to send an email to email@example.com verifying that you have the prerequisites for the course, have permission to break residency at your home school, and that the course you are planning to take will meet degree requirements at your home school.
If the Office of Undergraduate Business Programs and your advisor both approve and the class is available, apply for admission to UH as a Summer Visiting student (SUMVIS).
Once admitted, there will be a hold placed on your record for the Texas Success Initiative, a state exam required of all degree-seeking students. Since you are not planning to be a degree-seeking student at UH, you must contact the University Scholars Program (UScholars) at 832-842-2100 to request a waiver/exemption form (sent via email).
Complete the waiver form and fax the form (and a copy of your fall schedule at your home school) to UScholars at 713-743-8998 as proof that you are a Summer Visiting student. They should remove the stop within one business day.
Once the stop is removed, email firstname.lastname@example.org with the course and class number you need and you will be registered as long as the course is open.
