Helpful information for parents
GRADUATION PLEDGE
Eligible incoming freshman starting at UH in the Summer/Fall 2006 semesters and forward are encouraged to participate in the UH Graduation Pledge award program. Please see the attached form for more information about funding for students who are making timely progress towards their undergraduate degree!
Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 protects a student’s right to privacy concerning their academic records and information. According to FERPA, after a student officially enrolls at the university (i.e. signs up for classes) university personnel can no longer discuss their personal records with anyone other than the student. This is often a shock to many parents, especially when they are paying the tuition bills!
Many parents fear that FERPA may impede their ability to support their student’s progress. However, remember that the best resource to find out information about your student’s progress is your student! We have included a helpful book, “A Family Guide to Academic Advising”, to help you learn more about FERPA (pg. 28) and talk with your student about a variety of academic issues. For more information about FERPA, visit: www.uh.edu/legal-affairs/general-counsel/ferpa/
ACADEMIC ADVISING
All students are expected to seek formal academic advising on a regular basis. Although formal advising sessions are not required, they are expected and highly recommended. Bauer Honors provides many services to encourage students to take advantage of this opportunity through personal phone calls and email reminders prior to registration. Please help us - encourage your student to get advised! If you are interested, with your student’s written permission you are welcome to attend their first advising appointment (coming up soon!) if you would like to observe how this process works.
