Hetto Bryan

Are "Ito" and "Hetto" and "Ittar" and "Illac" and "Ety" the same person?

John Bryan

Franklin County GA -- Revolutionary War Soldier
(Thomas Johnson Bryan's paternal grandfather)

  1. Hetto Bryan

Thomas Johnson Bryan's father and son of John Bryan -- Revolutionary War soldier of Franklin County GA

    • The Lost Connection to "Ito" and the 1850 DeKalb Georgia Census

My father used to speak of an ancestor named "Ito" on the Bryan side of our family. The use of the spelling "Ito" is only my interpretation of my father's words. It sounded like a long letter "e" followed by the word "toe". E-TOE". It was nowhere written down.

For years I've been searching for Thomas Johnson Bryan's parents (i.e., the elusive "Ito") without any luck. Recently I came across a listing on the web for the index of 1850 DeKalb GA census Blackhall District page 185 (very near to Meredith Brown (father of Anis Brown -- Thomas Johnson Bryan's wife). It says "Heth" Byant. This is most exciting because it shows a 20 yr. old son Thomas. Right place -- right time---right age...but nothing else. When I went to the actual census image and looked it up I couldn't exactly read the father's first name (maybe it was Heth?) and the name was NOT in the index for 1850. Looking around some more i found that the census had mis-spelled the last name as "Byant" -- leaving out the letter "r". Bad enough -- but the first name is clearly shown as "Hetto". The ancestry.com index of the 1850 Georgia census shows this person as "Hetts Byant".

      But, it is not "Heth" Byant the Georgia Census Index says;
      nor "Hetts" Byant as the Ancestry.com 1850 census index says;
but "Hetto" as the 1850 DeKalb census image shows below
      :

Here are some more samples of capital "H" from the same census taker:

      James Head

      Richard Head

      Harriet

      Henderson

      Clearly Hetto.

Thanks to Margie von Marenholtz here is the relevant image of "Hetto/Ety/Ittar" from John Byran's 1825 will:

      1. "H/I" from "...and unto my son (Illac?/Illai?)

      2. "H" from the lines that read "...one hundred dollars"

      3. "I" from the line that reads "In the presence of..."

      4. "I" from the line that reads "In the name of God Amen"

      5. "I" from the line that reads "I will that all my estate..."

      6. Close up of the "I" from the line that reads "Illac/Ittar"

Thus, "Ittar" is really "Illac(Illai?Ely?)" as shown in the will above. He gets half the Gwinnett land in 1825 and is shown adjacent to his mother Nancy on the 1830 Gwinnett census. So "Ittar" IS "Illac". And thus in 1850, spelled correctly in the 1850 DeKalb Census.

From http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2831775&id=I1101 from a search on "John Bryan" Ancestry.com many trees appear with differing dates and places of birth and death. The common thread in the list of children as shown above and the wife named as "Nancy Mayes" -- which I doubt..

If we take the distribution of the Gwinnett land referenced in the will and the 1830 census, then:

Nancy Bryant (widowed wife of John) and her son WOULD be on adjacent property in Gwinnett in 1830. So we might conclude that Thomas Johnson Bryan is the son of Hetto/Ety/Ittar who is a son of John the revolutionary War soldier.

My Current Speculation on father Hetto Bryan and grandfather John Bryan

Now for the STRETCH. How do we show that the "Ittar" Bryant is the same as "Hetto" Byant on the 1850 DeKalb census. My father's pronunciation of the name was "Ito" (a long E, then TOE -- E-TOE). But as any southerner knows "...if a word ends in an "o" you say it as if it ended in "r". Like "potato" becomes "potater" or "tomato" become "tomater". Like: "...some nice maters" would mean "some nice tomatoes". Thus in the deep south when you say Hetto (Etto or Ito) you get as sound like the word "eater". Drop the "H" entirely, soften the "E" and then say "TER".

So the 1850 Hetto/Etto/Ito is pronounced "eater".

When spelled out phonetically by the 1830 census taker in Gwinnett county and the Franklin County lawyer in John Bryan's will it was written as "Ittar". Just like in sounds -- "eater". Just a guess -- but then again what else could Ittar really be. Drop the "r" and its is Hetto/Etto/Ito. Comparing the two census takers (1830 Gwinnett and 1850 Dekalb. The 1830 census taker spelled phonetically. The 1850 census taker spelled correctly but absent mindedly left out the "r" in Byrant.

If this "Ittar" adjacent to Nancy in 1830 Gwinett census as the 1825 will of John would have you believe...

      and

...Ety Briant adjacent to Nancy Bryant in the 1840 Gwinnett census...

      and

...the Hetto Byant in the 1850 DeKalb census are one in the same...

      and

...then the person "Illac" who gets half the Gwinnett land in the 1825 will of Revolutionary Soldier John Bryan is all the same guy!

Looks most like "Ittar". Two crossed "t"s and two more letters -- maybe "ar" or "er". The entire 1850 Dekalb entry for Hetto Byant (note the missing R) is:

      1850 DeKalb Georgia Census, Blackhall
Hetto Byant 49 GA farmer $1000
      Sarah 49 SC
      Thos 20 GA
      Nicholas 16 GA
      Elizabeth 15 GA
      James 7 GA

[This makes Hetto and Sarah born circa 1801]

The 1880 Pickens County Georgia census states that Thomas Johnson Bryan's parents were BOTH born in SC. Note that the 1850 Georgia census, Hetto states he was born in Georgia.

Where is the name Hetto from?...on http://www.saintpatrickdc.org/ss/0710.htm you can find:

"Etto of Fescau, OSB B (AC) (also known as Hetto of Dompierre) Died c. 670. Saint Etto is said to have been a native of Ireland, who went to France with Saint Fursey. He is known, however, for his evangelistic efforts in Belgium, where he used Saint Peter's Abbey at Fescan as his headquarters. Until recently, his festival was solemnly kept with a procession of his relics with a mounted escort. In 1920, during the Irish Troubles, Cardinal Mercier of Belgium sent a letter to the Irish bishops expressing Belgium's gratitude for Etto's missionary efforts (Benedictines, Montague). In art, Saint Etto is a bishop surrounded by cattle. He is venerated in Belgium (Roeder)."

A real Irish name. This saint day is celebrated July 10. This may explain the family long term memory of Hetto (pronounce "Ito" as "E-TOE"). Both my sister and my Aunt Bonnie remember this tradition.

    • "Ittar" and the 1830 Gwinnett Census

The decade long search for Hetto Bryan had ended, until I found some references to early Georgia land lotteries. The 1832 Cherokee County Georgia Land Lottery makes note that:

      Ittar Bryan, Loveless's, Gwinnett.

drew in 10th District, 3rd Section, Cherokee County.

From genforum.com on the Bryan family are several references to this "Ittar":

http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Ittar::Bryan::4954.html (Margie von Marenholtz Date: May 15, 2001 at 15:28:40)
      http://genforum.genealogy.com/Bryan/messages/5602.html (Joyce Wilson December 14, 2001 at 16:16:08)

Wilson notes that "Ittar" appears on the 1830 Federal Census for Gwinnett county Georgia as:

The columns count free white males then females in the categories:
      name of head of household; number of free white males and females in age categories: 0 to 5 (col 1 & 14), 5 to 10 (col 2 & 15), 10 to 15 (col 3 & 16), 15 to 20 (col 4 & 17, 20 to 30 (col 5 & 18), 30 to 40 (col 6 & 19), 40 to 50 (col 7 & 20), 50 to 60 (col 8 & 21), 60 to 70 (col 9 & 22), 70 to 80 (col 10 & 23), 80 to 90 (col 11 & 24), 90 to 100 (col 12 & 25), over 100 (col 13 & 26); the name of a slave owner and the number of slaves owned by that person; the number of male and female slaves and free "colored" persons by age categories; the number of foreigners (not naturalized) in a household; the number of deaf, dumb, and blind persons within a household; and town or district, and county of residence.

Thus the 1830 Gwinnett Georgia census shows that:

      1830 Gwinnett Georgia Census
      Nancy 60-70 (col 22)
      male child 10-15 (col 3)
      plus 2 slaves

      next door:
      Itar age 30-40 (col 6)
female child less than 5 (col 14)
      female 20-30 (col 18)
      plus one slave

With the exception of spelling, this "Ittar" on the 1830 census and the "Hetto" Byant on the 1850 DeKalb census could be the same. Both were born ca 1800.

From Gwinnett County Inferior Court Minutes (for County purposes), 1820-1832., Abstracted by Ted O. Brooke & Faye Stone Poss:

      On page 188:

"Jurors sworn to serve at June term, 1829: Itti(?) Bryan,..."

      On page 189:

"The following jurors having been called, empanneled & sworn took their seats: Itti (?) Bryant..."

    • Ety and the 1840 Census of Gwinnett

"Nancy" and "Ety" also appear as "Briant" in the 1840 Gwinnett census shown below:

This census taker (who was not much of a speller) shows "Ety Briant" and "Nancy Briant":

      1840 Gwinnett Georgia Census
Nancy Briant 70-80 [an living alone]

      Ety Briant 30-40
      2 males 5-10
      1 male 15-20
      1 female less than 5
      1 female 10-15
      1 female 30-40

This family of 7 (4 males, 3 females) corresponds "somewhat" with "Hetto" family of 6 (4 males, 2 females) in the 1850 Dekalb census.

      Two children are missing from the 1850 census. There are three sons on the 1840 census -- but only two appear on the 1850 census;

      and

there are two daughters on the 1840 census -- but only one on the 1850 census. Thus the total number of children of Hetto and Sarah is six: 4 sons (unamed older son, Thomas, Nicholas and James) and two daughters (unnamed older daughter and Narcissa Elizabeth). The elder Bryan son would be born between 1820 and 1825 and be age 25-30 in 1850. The only candidate in the Dekalb 1850 census is:

      • BryanT, Asa, 26; Martha, 20; Emily, 3; Susan J., 2; Buckhead Dist., 9 (b 1824 GA, indexed by ancestry.com as "Ryant")

I have nothing to tie this Asa to Hetto and find him in no later censuses.

      The 1850 DeKalb census shows:

1850 DeKalb Georgia Census, Blackhall page 4/19
Hetto Byant 49 GA farmer $1,000 (would be 39 in 1840)
                           [indexed Hetts at ancestry.com]
Sarah 49 SC (would be 39 in 1840)
Thos 20 GA (would be 10 in 1840)
Nicholas 16 GA (would be 6 in 1840)
Elizabeth 15 GA (would be 5 in 1840)
James 7 GA (would not appear in 1840)

    • The 1860 census

Hetto's son Thomas Bryan in Pickens County GA, but I have not found Hetto. In 1860 they should be in the Blackhall district of Fulton County-- which is now in the newly formed Fulton County. Younger brother James is in the "Atlanta Hotel" age 15 as is older brother "Thos". Nicholas is shown in 1860 in the home of D.C. Rutledge as "Lump Bryan 23 laborer born GA".

However, in 1860 Fulton County other relations in the Blackhall district residence are:

    • The 1870 Census

Again in 1870, T.J. Bryan(t) and family is on the Pickens County Georgia 1870 Census (see below). His brother Nicholas is in Fulton County in Atlanta (see below) and adjacent to Nicholas is:

      1870 Fulton Georgia Census
      Ittar Bryant 70 Farmer $2,000 $300 GA

adjacent is son Nicholas (see below)

I have found that Hetto doesn't appear on any later censuses. Apparently he dies after 1870 -- probably in Fulton County GA.

I have also been unable to find Hetto's son James N Bryan on the 1870 census.

But -- I finally located the Hetto/Hitto here:

  2. Descendants of Hetto: Thomas Johnson Bryan (6/27/1831-1/7/1897)

Thomas married 10/18/1855 in Fulton County Georgia Anis Brown (2/22/1836-7/16/1897). He is shown as a 28 year old grocer in Jasper GAon the 1860 census. Both are shown born in GAThomas was the Tax Collector for Pickens County in 1862. Thomas Johnson Briant (Bryan) appears on the 1860 Pickens County Georgia (Jasper) shows:

Two surviving children are mentioned above: (1) C.M. Bryan is Nicholas' son Charles and (2) Mrs. J. N. Slater is daughter Lula. J.N. Bryan is brother James and Mrs. Elizabeth Hughes is his ister. There is a Narcissa E Hughes (wife of John S Hughes) who lives adjacent to Nicholas on the 1900 census and might be sister Elizabeth.

    In 1840 DeKalb District 530:

    • Henry 30-40
    • Hiram 20-30
    • James 30-40
    • Richard 30-40
    • Richard Senior 50-60 [bc 1785]
    • William 30-40

So, likely Emaline Head is daughter of Henry Head, son of Richard Head
See this by Nacy A Daniels Page 16.

    60. Henry Head, born Abt. 1815/17; died Unknown. He was the son of Richard Head and Sarah Hatcher. He married Mary A. Mobbs Abt. 183417.
    61. Mary A. Mobbs, died Unknown.
    Notes for Henry Head:
    Jewell Rowe writes:
I think Henry is the best choice to be the husband of Mary A. --I used Mobbs since the Henry in the reference material had a Henry marrying a Mary Mobbs. I think all other boys are accounted for except Hiram -- he could be the husband but I don't think so. Henry in the 184- census report had children near the right age for the children left with Mary. I am NOT making the husband be Henry as a fact. It is the best choice to work with and is subject to change.

    Notes for Mary A. Mobbs:
    Jewell Rowe wrote:
I do not know who the husband of Mary A Head was. I believe it was Henry, a son of Richard Head. One of his sons, Richard was in DeKalb CO, GAin the 1830 census. Note: Nicholas was first married to Mary J (or A or E) Mobbs in 1861. A George W. Mobbs appears on the Blackhall 1850 census with daughter Mary E (or A or J) age 6 (i.e., born 1844). This George Mobbs also appears on the Black Hall Fulton GAin 1860 as:

    1860 Fulton GA
    G W Mobbs 43 farmer VA 2,500 1,000
    Elizabeth Mobbs 43 GA

    Mary J Mobbs 16 GA
    Jackson Mobbs 12 GA
    Edgefield Mobbs 10 GA
    Martha Mobbs 4 GA

Notice that Mary has initial J in this version.

Brother Killis served as a private in Company A of the 56th Georgia Infantry. He was capotured at Vicksburg and captured again in Paulding County GAin July 1863 and took the "oath" and remained north of the Ohio River during the war. Notes complexion "St", hair "Dk", eyes Gray, height 5' 10".

Brother Joseph Mobbs was a private in Company D 36th Georgia Infantry enrolled at Fort McRee March 15 1861, listed as a "brick moulder". Listed as "in confinment" June 1 1861

J E Bryan appears with two children in 1870 in Powder Springs, Campbell GA:

    J E Bryan 25
    Joseph Bryan 8
    Georgia Bryan 5

She is adjacent to: (1) her father George 53, mother Elisa 53, sister Martha 13; (2) brother James L Mobbs 30 and family; (3) brother K B Mobbs and family 29; (4) brother D J Mobbs and family age 22; and (5) brother Edgefield Mobbs and family age 20.

Mary J Mobbs then reappears in 1880 with her father in Douglas County GA:

Geo W. Mobbs 63 lawyer VA VA VA
Elizabeth Mobbs 63 GA GA GA
Mary J. Bryant 35 GA GA GA daughter divorced

James M. Edmondson 18 GA GA GA laborer
Linnie Edmondson 15 GA GA GA adopted daughter

This tree provides three children of Nicholas Bryan and Mary Mobbs:

    1. Joseph L Bryant (1862-
    2. Georgia A. E. Bryant (1866-
    3. Gordia Loma Bryant (1873 Fulton GA- 1951 Tipton GA) m William Henry McCard (1868-1912)

Elizabeth Brown Routon is listed in the tree above as the wife of George W. Mobbs. The use of the name Killis and Edgefield comes from the Peter Brown family below who also lived in Blackhall. I cannot place this ELizabeth with the Brown family below except by geography and naming.

    So, since Nicholas Brown:

    1. married first to Mary J. (or E. or A.) Mobbs 10 Feb 1861 Fulton County (bc 1845 GA) -- daughter of George W Mobbs;
      and then
    2. married second to Emma Head Feb 13 1868 (daughter of Henry Head and Mary Mobbs (b 1812). This Mary Mobbs is George W. Mobbs' (above)sister.

So, Nicholas marries first cousins: Emma Mobbs Head (dau of Henry Head and Mary Mobbs) and Mary Mobbs (dau of George Mobbs and Elizabeth Brown).

I am still unable to reconcile:

    • Three children with Mary J Mobbs who he married in Feb 1861:
      1. Joseph L Bryant (1862-
      2. Georgia A Bryant (1866-
      3. Gordia Luva Bryant (1873)

    • and then he marries Emma Head in Feb 1868 and there are four more:

      1. Missouri (1863-
      2. Lula (1864-
      3. Charles (1969-
      4. Sarah (1872-

Note the overlapping dates of virtually all the children. So -- ? ? ? are there seven?

  • Descendants of Hetto: Narcissa Elizabeth Bryan (1836-1916)

Franklin Garrett's Necrology database (here) says:

    "Narcissis F Hughes b 19 June 1836 died 5 May 1916"

This citation says ahe was buried Fulton County Georgia.

The Atlanta Constitution Mortuary of May 7 , 1916 page 4

Mrs. N. E. Hughes aged 81 [implies born circa 1835] of McDonough, died at her home their Saturday morning. She is survived by her four sons. The body was brought to the chapel of H. G. Poole.

In Fulton Georgia Marriage Records 1854-1902 by Ted O. Brooke, Cummings GA2002:

"Narcissa E Bryan married William R Thurmond May 6 1855 Fulton"

Elizabeth Bryan is with her father Hetto Bryan in 1850 Blackhall DeKalb age 15 and William is on the 1850 Blackhall DeKalb census with his father age 16. In subsequent censuses Blackhall is in Fulton County -- formed in 1853.

This 2008 Rootsweb page by "Loren Thurman" (Thurman's Quest On-Line Surname Repository) says:

    "William R. P. Thurman b Apr 1834 in DeKalb GAd 10 Oct 1910, m Narcissa Elizabeth Bryant b June 19 1836"

and further, she says here that:

"Hitto Bryant" and "Elizabeth ?" are the parents of Narcissa Bryant.

There are three variations of data about William Thurmond:

    1. DanielPSmithJr (here) says "William R.P. Thurman is in 1900 Skipperville in Dale County AL and in 1910 resides in Bushnell, Sumter County FL."

The 1900 Dale Al census says William age 59 b Feb 1841 (GAGANC) farmer, Elizabeth age 56 b Apr 1844 (AL GAAL), m 29 years (i.e., m 1871), 5 children 4 surviving. This William is NOT in Dale AL census in 1910.

The 1910 Sumter FL census says: William A Thurman age 75 b 1835 (GA GA GA), Elizabeth age 66 b 1844 (GA GA GA), married 35 years (i.e., m 1875), 0 children. There is a 6 years difference in William's age between these two census records.

This Sumter FL William also appears in 1900 in Sumter County as W.A. Thurman (GA GA GA) age 65 b Jan 1835 married 34 years clergyman, with wife L.A. Thurman (GA GA GA) age 53 b May 1847 married 34 years 0 children 0 surviving. So it is unlikely he is also in Dale AL in 1900.

These two couples do not appear to be the same as Smith indicates. Further they not not match the 1850 census ages of William and Narcissa and the marriage dates do not match.

    2. John Lemon on Ancestry.com (here) says William Thurman b 04 22 1834 Dekalb GAd 10 10 1910 DeKalb GAm Matilda Brown Shepard 1854. This is from the LDS. I cannot verify this William's death in DeKalb in 1910.

    3. George Park on Ancestry.com says (here): "William R. P. Thurman b 22 Apr 1834 died 1862." He cites only on World Family Tree CD source.

    4. On rootsweb.com, five genealogies are presented for William R. P. Thurman. They all say he was the son of William Lawrence Thurman and ELizabeth White. Four say he died in 1910 (as discussed above) and one says he died in 1862. There is a "William Thurmond" of Company E 13th Georgia who died on Dec 10 1862 of disease in Richmond VA. His effects and pay were claimed by Mary Ann Thurman of Randolph County Georgia in 1864. Company E

These inconsistent reports about William Thurman make later tracking difficult. Below is the 1850 Census for William Thurman and father in Blackhall DeKalb GAand then William the younger is gone in 1860.

    William R.P. Thurman's father is:

1850 DeKalb GABlackhall Census pg 17/19
Wm Thourmond 72 SC $8,000 farming
[this says "Wm Lawrence Thurman", b 1778 Chesterfield SC
died 1871 Carroll GA, buried Smith Chapel m Elizabeth White,

[appears as a private in Company A and E of the 9th Battalion

    Sallie E Thurman 19 GA

So in 1860 Narcissa and William Thurman should be in Georgia. I have yet to find them together or separate anywhere after 1855.

So, where is Narcissa E. Bryan later in life? There are TWO different women named Elizabeth who later marry a Hughes.

In the funeral notice of Nicholas Bryan (above) in 1906 appear: his wife; his two surviving children: Charles (C.M. Bryan) and Lula (Mrs. James R Slater); his brother James (J.N.Bryan) and "Mrs. Elizabeth Hughes". This implies that this is a sister -- specifically the "Elizabeth" on the 1850 Dekalb census of Hetto Bryan at age 15 and thus married to a "Hughes". It cannot be a child of Nicholas nor his wife. Convention would make it an close relative -- parent, spouse, child, brother or sister.

Six years earlier on the Fulton GAcensus we find Nicholas adjacent to Narcissa E. Hughes [incorrectly indexed at Ancestry.com census database as "Marsissa" -- it is clearly "Narsissa" on the image] as follows:

1900 Fulton Georgia Census, South Bend, pg 46/65
John S Hughes 53 head AL SC SC farmer
                         b July 1846
Narsissa E Hughes 67 wife GA SC SC
                        [
                        [adjacent to Nicholas Bryan]
                        [indexed as Marsissa]
                        [birthplaces same as Nicholas above]
                         b July 1832, married 33 years, m 1867
                         9 children 5 surviving

Both John S. Hughes and Nicholas Bryan own their land. Hughes appears several times in the newspaper in Atlanta:

    • In the Atlanta Constitution March 26, 1895, says of Dr. Evans..."Mr. John S Hughes, a farmer residing near Southbend P.O. South Atlanta paralyzed for eight years could not walk without support cured by Dr. Evans three weeks ago."
    • In the Atlanta Constitution January 13, 1888, John S. Hughes was a juror in a murder trial.
    • In the Atlanta Constitution "Mortuary" June 28, 1909 page 2:

"John S. Hughes, 65 years of age died at his home at Lakewood Heights yesterday morning at 8 o'clock. The funeral will take place at the residence at 11 o'clock this morning. Internment in the South Bend churchyard. Nephews of the deceased will act as pall bearers. Two sons John and Willard Hughes, two brothers B.S and J.W Hughes and three sisters Miss Susie Hughes and Mesdames Julia Porter and W.G. Sherrill survive the deceased."

His wife is NOT mentioned -- Narcissa Elizabeth Byran died in 1916.

    • also in the Atlanta Constitution "Funeral Notices" June 28, 1909, page 12:

"HUGHES" -- The friends of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. W. Hughes, Mr. amd Mrs. J.L. Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Hughes, Miss Susie Hughes, Mrs. Julia Porter, Mr. and Nrs. W.S. Sherrill and Mrs. H.O. Hughes are invited to attend the funeral services of Mr. J.S. Hughes from the residence, Lakewood Heights, this Monday at 11 o'clock. Internment at South Bend Cemetery. The following will act as pallbearers and will please meet at Harry J. Poole's chapel at 10 o'clock: Messrs. W.W. Hughes, H.O. Hughes, L.M. Porter, R.D. Sherrill, J.T Bryan and H.C. Bryan.

[Note: "J.T. Bryan" may be James T. Bryan and "H.C. Bryan" is perhaps Harold C. Bryan, both sons of brother-in-law James Nelson Bryan]

This John S. Hughes also appears in Garrett's Necrology:

    LDS data here says:

"John S. Hughes (Jul 1846 GA-1909 Fulton GA) m in Fulton County GAon 31 Aug 1866 Narcissa Elizabeth Bryant (1836 GA- ?)"

So, there is the possibility that Narcissa marries William Thurman who dies before 1866 and she remarries John S. Hughes 1866.

However, other censuses, marriages and descendants are available. As the 1900 census says that Marissa Elizabeth Hughes has been married for 33 years, then she was married about 1866/7.

But, consider the 1870 Henry County census below for John S Hews and Elizabeth that shows four children born before 1867: Amanda b 1856, Mary E b 1857, Charles b 1859 and James W b 1860. Then there is a seven year break before Thomas G is born in 1867. Also notice that the birth dates in 1870 would imply that father John S "Hews" was having children at age 10. One would conclude that Elizabeth was married prior to 1867. A husband lost in the Civil War could explain this gap.

In Berea Cemetery in Henry County Georgia is: Hughes, Mary E 03-16-1834 - 02-06-1925. The birthdate does NOT correspond to the birthdate for Narcissa (Marissa) E Hughes on the 1900 Fulton GAcensus (see this).

Thus, S. Holland and others presents an entirely different origin for the wife of John S. Hughes. Some assume that wife Elizabeth Hughes is Elizabeth Derick of Henry County who had previously married two Black brothers. I cannot prove either way whether the 1900 John S. Hughes wife in Fulton next to Nicholas Bryan is Narcissa Elizabeth Bryan or Elizabeth (Black) Derrick.

    See evidence below.

    This (by S Holland) says:

"Any descendant of John T White and Mary A (Hughes) White She could have possibly been Mary A Black. I do not know There is a Lizziebeth Hughes living with this couple and she is given as mother in law. Searching to see if this Lizziebeth Hughes is the same as Mary E Hughes who is buried at Berea Cemetery in Hampton, GAThanks in advance for a reply"

    This (by S Holland) says:

"Searching for descendants of Mary E/Elizabeth Derick Black Hughes. Mary E/Elizabeth Derick married Caswell Black 1853 Henry County, GAhe died 1856 and she married his brother Nathaniel Black after 1859/60 he was killied in the Civil War 1863. She married Mr. Hughes after that time. I find her on the 1920 Henry County, GAcensus living with her daugher Martha Caswell (Mattie) Black Thackston. Any descendant of this family I would appreciate a reply and Thank you in advance.

    This by S Holland says:

"Thomas S Black b Virginia and Faitha Meadows Black of Upson Cty. moved there in the 1820's. They had 6 sons. Caswell Black son #2 married Elizabeth M Derrick in Henry County in 1854. 1857 he died and Elizabeth is given on 1860 Henry County Census living with her parents with a 3 yr old daughter, listed only by initials of E. C....It is said by the Black family that Nathaniel Black son #6 married Elizabeth and then he was killed at Jackson, Mississippi 14 May 1863..."

This says the following of the relationships of the Black family:

John Thomas Black m in 1823 Faitha Meadows in Putnam County GA(son of Richardson Black of VA) children:

    1. James Black b 1824

    7. Nathaniel S. Black b 1840 Upson GAdied May 14 1863 Jackson MS, Company A 46th GAInf. Perhaps married Elizabeth Derrick after the death of his brother Caswell in 1856. This, and this and this say that the child of Elizabeth Derrick was fathered by Nathaniel
    8. Cary Black b. 1842
    9. Susan Black 1845

    8. Catherine Hughes (1874-

Evidence of the wife of John Hughes is in fact Narcissa Elizabeth (Thurman) Bryan is:

    • the 1900 census where the name of John S Hughes wife is unambiguosly "Narcissa E"
    • the 1900 couple is immediately adjacent to Narcissa E. Bryan's brother Nicholas
    • the four children on the 1870 Henry census (born 1856,1857,1859, 1860) are not Hughes but Thurman children
    • there is a Narcissa E. Hughes in Garrett's Necrology who died in 1916
    • there is an N.E. Hughes who died in Henry County GAin 1916 in the Atlanta Constitution death noticed. She is survived by four sons.
    • ages and places of parent's birth for Narcissa and Nicholas match

  • Descendants of Hetto: James Nelson Bryan (1843-1922)

James appears with father Hetto on the 1850 DeKalb Georgia census.

Brother "Thos Byran, merchant, age 25" appears on the 1860 census of Fulton County in the "Atlanta Hotel" (Joseph Thompson, manager). In the same hotel is brother "Janes Bryan, age 15".

I cannot find him on the 1870 census.

James served with his brother Nicholas in Leyden's Artillery Battalion in the Civil War.

  • John Bryan -- Revolutionary War Soldier -- Thomas Johnson Bryan's Grandfather

    Update in progress July 2010

The most complete archive of John Bryan is that of Jeanne Lee Bryan Insalaco of New Haven, Connecticut. (See this site here).

A summary of her site's most important documents:

    • 1787 land in Franklin county Georgia

"...Bryan and wife Nancy sold to Warren Philpot 150 acres for 30 pounds on the Tugalo River adjoining John Mullin, Sr. and Robert Thrasher granted to said Bryan by Gov. George Mathews July 27, 1787 (apparently for his Revolutionary War service) and registered in Secretary's office in Bk. A.A.A., folio 471 with plat.... Wit: Benja. Echols, J. P."

    • 1791 land purchase

"Deed dated February 14, 1791 from John Mullin, Senior, and wife Elizabeth (x) to John Bryan for consideration of 100 lb's, conveys 300 acres in Franklin County, GA On Thrasher Creek, a south branch of Tugalo River...Signed: John Mullin...Witness: Benjamin Echols, John Smith, J. P."

    • These two entries below (from http://www.genealogy.com/users/b/r/y/Jeanne-L-Bryaninsalaco/FILE/0010text.txt) show that John Bryan died before 1830:

01/07/1830 Relinquishment to an Estate - James Bryan sells and transfers to Joel Mayes Bryan all the rights, titles and interest and claim which I as one of the heirs of my father, John Bryan, deceased... Signed: James Bryan (seal)... Witness: W. H. Steelman... Recorded: October 14, 1831. (Source: Habersham County, Ga. Deed Bk. LL, pg. 13) (Note: This deed is the first item where we have found James Bryan recording the name of his father)

      and

07/30/1831 Relinquishment to an interest in the estate of John Bryan. Ransom Cain of Habersham County, from this day sold and transferred to John Bryan all rights and interest which I as one of the heirs of my father, John Bryan, deceased, relinquish my right and title and interest... Signed: Ransom (x) Cain, Eliz (x) Cain... Witness: Joel M. Bryan, Rebecca (x) Bryan, James Bryan, J. P... Recorded: October 14, 1831. (Source: Deed Book, LL, pg. 12) (Note: As this was from the estate of John Bryan, father of Elizabeth Bryan Cain, why did the deed seem to read to Ransom Cain (her husband) and not her? Why did her deed not say, my father, John Bryan?)

    • and from Jeanne L Bryan Insalaco:

"I know it's circumstantial to some degree, but it seems pretty evident to me that our James was a brother to Tarrance Bryan, that they were both sons of this John Bryan, and that John Bryan had six other children then living, since the deeds from James and Tarrance show that they each owned a one-eighth interest in the said property."

    • Other documents place Bryan in Franklin county through 1815.

    • 1827 Georgia Land Lottery shows:

Bryan, Nancy w.R.S. Residence: Gwinnett County Capts. District: Maddoxs Lee County Section: 1 District: 12 Lot Number: 4
Bryan, Nancy widow Residence: Gwinnett County Capts. District: Maddux Troup County Section: 3 District: 7 Lot Number: 86

This implies John died before 1827 as Nancy is identified as a widow in 1827.

Thus, we can conclude that John had 8 legatees and died before 1827.

During the two decade period where there are NO census records for Franklin (nor the rest of Georgia), the tax lists are one possible source of data. The table above indicates that: David; Edward; Eli/Elisha/Elijah; John; Thomas; and Zacariah Bryan are consistent tax payers in Franklin.

** Note: both a John Bryan, Sr. and John Bryan, Jr. are identified in the tax list for 1807. This might imply that John, Jr. is 21 years old in 1807 and thus born in 1786 or before. (see discussion about John. Jr. below)

Another researcher (Margie von Marenholtz as above) contributed a will from Franklin county Georgia of a John Bryan (see http://genforum.genealogy.com/Bryan/messages/2756.html). This will states:

In the name of God Amen. I JOHN Bryan being in my proper mind but in a low state of health and knowing that is is appointed for all men once to die, I will that all my estate that the Almighty has blessed me with be disposed of in the following manner to wit, 1st. I will my spirit to God that gave it and my body to be decently buried. 2nd. All my just debts first paid, then I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Nancy Bryan all my estate both real and personal to be by her held and enjoyed during her natural life or widowhood. And at her decase or intermarriage, I will that all my estate both real and personal be equally divided among all my children equally except that I will unto my son Illac (Illai?) Bryan one negro boy named Abram and one equal half of my land in the county of Gwinnett to be his full share of my estate and I further will that my wife pay over One Hundred Dollars out of the first money collected unto my son Thomas Bryan in part of share of my estate. Given under my hand and seal this 20th October 1825. John (his mark) Bryan (L.S.)

    and

John was a Rev. Soldier, as indicated on a land deed (no further war record info). Besides Illac (Illai?Ely?)and Thomas in Will, land records indicate other children were Joel M., John, Rebecca, Elizabeth (Mrs. Ransom Cain) & most likely James Bryan (husb of Elizabeth Cain).

This message was about a son of John named Tarrance (or Torrance or Terrence). A little digging and you get the family for John (of the 1825 will) as:

John Bryan (bc 1760 - between 1825-1827 in GA)
wife Nancy (maybe Mayes or maybe NOT)

Several Bryan men received headright grants in Franklin County: (see source)

    • 1793 John Bryan
    • 1793 Samuel Bryan
    • 1797 Archie Bryan
    • 1797 Thomas Bryan

The formation of counties that are discussed here are shown below:

    1784 GEORGIA

     Franklin County formed

John Bryan's Revolutionary War land grant occurred in Franklin County in 1787.

    1790 GEORGIA

     Elbert County formed

The Thomas Johnson of Walker County (who I am alleging below is NOT the son of John Bryan of Franklin County -- but the son of Thomas Bryan) is normally shown as being born in Elbert County in 1793.

    1796 GEORGIA

     Jackson County formed

A major portion of Franklin county becomes Jackson County

    1818 GEORGIA

     Habersham, Gwinnett, Hall Counties formed

Habersham, Gwinnett and Hall counties all take parts of the original Franklin county

    1833 GEORGIA

     Walker County formed

Two Thomas Bryan men (father and son) move to Walker in the 1830s

In the book Whites Among the Cherokee, Georgia 1828-1838 by Mary Bondurant Warren and Eve B. Weeks, there is extensive discussion of white settlers living in Cherokee Territory in Georgia. If one compares the two maps above for 1818 and 1833, by 1833 most of the Cherokee land in Georgia has been formed into counties. Several of the Bryans are shown in this book:

    • From page 37, from the Cherokee agency Oct 1830: "Persons allowed to remain in the Cherokee nation" are:

Joel M Bryan wife, no children, farmer (pg 39)
John Bryan wife 9 children, farmer (pg 39)

    • "License for residence in the Cherokee Nation has been issued to the following persons" (page 62 followed by 208 entries)

      Joel M. Bryan 2 (pg 64)
      John Bryan 7 (pg 65)

    • Lumpkin County GA Census "The amount of free white population of Lumpkin County. TAken by John Oxford 1834" (Page 165):

      James Bryan 7
      Tarrence Bryan 8

    • Lumpkin County Census April 1838 (pg 214)

      James Bryant #in family: 7 males 6-16 1; females 6-16 2 (census page 16, book pg 222)

Children of John Bryan -- Revolutionary War soldier of Franklin GA and wife Nancy (not Nancy Mayes):

    1. John Bryan (bc 1785 - after 1831)

I assume this is the father of Joel Mayes Bryan and the eldest son of Revolutionary War soldier John Bryan. Thus, this is the John Bryan who married Nancy Mayes daughter of John Mayes -- NOT John Bryan -- revolutionary war soldier of Franklin GA.

The Habersham County Georgia Census of 1820 for "John Bryan" says:

1 male 10-16 [could be Joel Mayes Bryan age 11, bc 1809]
1 male 26-45 [could be the John Bryan son of John Bryan RWS]
1 female 26-45 [could be Nancy Mayes Bryan born between 1790 and 1795]

The Habersham County Georgia Census of 1830 for "John Bryend". This could be the older or the younger head of household:

1 male 20-30 [could be Joel Mayes Bryan age 21, bc 1809 -- but where is wife Rebecca?]
1 male 40-50 [could be the John Bryan son of John Bryan RWS]
1 male 70-80 [might be John Bryan RWS -- death date is unknown, this person was b 1750-1760]
1 female 40-50 [could be Nancy Mayes Bryan born between 1790 and 1795]

Compare this to the data contained in the book "Whites Among the Cherokee" shown above. The book places Joel Mayes (2 people) and John Bryan (with 7 people) in 1830 in Cherokee Territory. They may be also included in Habersham County census of 1830 as shown above on the Federal Census. The entry on the Federal census is on the "last page" of the Habersham census. These two data sources create a conflict in identifying John Bryan, Jr. and Joel Mayes Byran. Joel does not appear on ANY Federal census in 1830 -- but does appear in the Cherokee Nation list in 1830. Further, the two Cherokee lists show John Bryan with 7 and 9 children -- yet the Federal census in Habersham shows only a single son 20-30.

No Bryans in Habersham in 1840.

See the Habersham County deed transactions for John Mayes (1750 VA - 1822 GA) and his descendents below from 1818-1820.

      One may infer:

      • That these census entries for 1820 and 1830 are John Bryan (Junior), Nancy Mayes and Joel Mayes Bryan. This census data places a low limit on the age of John Bryan (son of John the RWS). the 1830 census says be must be "born no later than 1790" and the 1820 census implies that he was "born no later than 1796".
      • Further, the 1807 Franklin Tax List indicates a John Sr. and John Jr. both paying taxes in that year. If John, Jr. was twenty one years old (taxable) then he would have to have been born in 1785 (see Franklin GA tax lists above). This could be feasible as his sister Elizabeth was born in 1787 and not married until 1822 at age 35 and her first child was born in 1822. As Joel Mayes Bryan was born in 1809 -- his father John Bryan, Jr. if born as early as 1785 would be 24 years old at the time of his child.
      • Nancy Mayes -- wife of John, Jr states on the 1860 census that she is 70, implying she was 19 when Joel Mayes Bryan was born. The Mayes family genealogy on rootsweb (shown above) makes her five years older.

Thus, I make the suggestion that John, Jr is the eldest child of John RWS.

Compare (see subsequent sections of the children of John RWS):

      • John Jr's first child Joel was born in 1809
This does NOT resolve the appearance of a John Bryan with numerous (7 and 9) on the two Cherokee Agency lists.
      • Elizabeth Cain's first child was born in 1822
      • Tarrence eldest child was born after 1820
      • Hetto eldest child was born about 1820
      • James eldest was born 1817
      • Thomas edlest after 1820

John Mayes (1750 Halifax VA-1822 Habersham GA) married Charlotte Samuel and had the following children (see e.g., this):

      1. Lucy Mayes (1789 SC-1867 Cherokee Nation Indian Territory OK)
Married 1805 George Ward (1787 Cherokee Nation-1863 Cherokee Nation Oklahoma)
Nine children born in Cherokee nation East (GA) from 1807-1823. George was assasinated by the Pin Indians during the Civil War. Children: (1) Sabrina Ward (m. Arthur); (2) Charlotte Ward (m. Stover); (3) Wiley John Ward; (4) James Ward; (5) Susan Ward (m. Lindsey); (6) Martha "Patsey" Ward (m. Countryman); (7) Mary Ward (m. Clarke); (8) Samuel M. Ward; (9) Nancy Ward (m. Wm. Dameron); (10) Lucy Ann Ward (m1. Colcher, m2. Thompson, m3 Howell, m4. Luckey); (11) Melinda Ward (m. Thornton).

      2. Charlotte Mayes (1792--
Married David Allison. Two children: Louis Dorch Allison (1818- dc 1870 Crawford AR) and Cunningham Allison ( -dc.1829 Bount AL)

      3. Nancy Mayes (1795-1876)
        Married John Bryan
This birthdate indicates she could NOT have fathered John Bryan's (the Revolutionary War soldier) known children Tarrence (b 1795), James (b 1791), and Elizabeth (b 1787) and must be the wife of John's son John

      4. Samuel Mayes (1803-1858 Mayes OK)
Married 1824 Nancy Adair (1808 Cherokee Nation East -- GA)
Four children born in Cherokee nation East (GA) from 1824-1833, one in OK.
Nancy Adair was part Cherokee through here grandfather John Adair who married a full blooded Cherokee named Ga-hoga of the Deer Clan. Their son Walter Adair (born 1783) married in 1804 Rachel Thompson (full bloooded white born 1786-died 1876). Nancy Adair (born 1808) was their daughter and thus 1/4 Cherokee. Samuel and Nancy removed to Indian Territory in 1838. Thier son Joel Bryan Mayes (b 1833 GA-1891) was elected the chief of the Cherokee tribe in 1887 and 1891. Another son of Samuel Mayes and Nancy Adair was Samuel Houston Mayes (1845-1927) who was elected Chief of the Cherokees in 1895 (See this from the Chronicles of Oklahoma)

These children are shown in Habersham GA transactions below.

From Jeanne Lee Bryan-Insalaco's Bryan site, the following deeds relating to the Mayes/Bryant family are found:

      • 01/09/1818 Deed from John Mayes of Franklin, County, Ga. to James Bryan of same. So, I am placing Joel Mayes Bryan (1809 GA - 1889 OK) here as the only son of John Bryan and Nancy Mayes

I am including this section because almost all web sites include John Mayes Bryan as a son of John Bryan the Revolutionary War soldier. They allege him to be the son of Nancy Mayes (1887-1876) and John Bryan.

But, I think this Nancy Mayes is the daughter of John Mayes (1770-1803) and Charlotte Samuel was NOT married to John Bryan the Revolutionary War Veteran -- but to his son John.

Here is some support for this viewpoint:

From the Oklahoma Historical Society's Chronicle of Oklahoma, Vol 15. No.1 March 1937 (see here):

      "The Mayeses"

      by John Bartlett Meserve

Page 58, footnote while discussing the founder of Mayes County OK Joel Bryan Mayes, there is this:

"O'Beirne, The Indian Territory; Its Chiefs, Legislators and Leading Men, p. 103. Joel Bryan Mayes was named for his cousin, Joel Mayes Bryan, who was the only son of John Bryan and Nancy (Mayes) Bryan. She was a sister of Samuel Mayes. Joel Mayes Bryan was born in Bates County, Georgia on October 2, 1809. He came to the Indian Territory in 1832 and his home, built by him in 1883, is still standing (1936) seven miles east of Stilwell, Adair County, Oklahoma. This home was purchased by John Thompson Adair in 1838 and is still in possession of the Adair family. Joel Mayes Bryan, in 1843 began operating the salt works at the old Union Mission and so continued for many years. ("Salt Works in Early Oklahoma," Grant Foreman, Chronicles of Oklahoma, Vol. 10, pp. 495 et seq.) Joel Mayes Bryan died on August 8, 1898 and is buried in the family cemetery on the old Bryan farm southeast of Pryor, a farm now owned and occupied by Joel Mayes Bryan, his 81 year old son."

See my case for the two Nancy's below

Joel married Rebecca Wright (1814-1882) daughter of John Jack Wright (bc 1766 SC- ) and Jennie Crittenden (1772 Cherokee Nation East TN- died after 1820). Jemmie was the daughter of ? Crittenden and Nannie Downing (bc 1750-?) of the Wolf Clan. She was the granddaughter of British Major John Downing (1720-1762) and Hannah Fawling (Wolf Clan). Major Downing was tortured, mutilated, and burned at the stake(see this). From the "History of the Cherokee Indians and their Legends and Folklore by Emmet Starr, page 467 says:

"Tradition says that after a violent storm on the coast of South Carolina a baby was found leasehed to a spar. He was well clothed and the only word he could articulate was 'Jack' and upon being adopted by a family known as Wrig, he was known as Jack Wright. He married Jennie Crittenden. Rebecca Wright born Jan 1 1814, married Joel Mayes Bryan born Oct 22 1809. She died April 5, 1882. He died Aug 7 1899...

...Rebecca Wright a quarter blooded Cherokee of the Wolf Clan married Joel Mayes Bryan. (pg. 591)"

In the book "Whites Among the Cherokee" Jack Wright is discussed in several places:

      • In the discussion of Cherokee County (the parent county composed the entirety of the Cherokee Nation of Georgia) on page 237:

"John (jack) Wright and Jennie Crittenden emigated. He came into the Cherokee Nation at the end of the Revolution and settled...Moses Alberty married Sally Wright daughter of Jack Wright and Jennie Crittenden and emigrated."

      • On page 233 is:

"Jack Wright married Jennie Crittenden and lived at Red Bank and Hickory Log Town. He travelled with Coffe e and pointed out villages and old trails, the basis for the map drawn in 1829 by Coffee."

Gen. John Coffee (1772-1833) was surveyor general of public lands and directed to Georgia by Pres. Jackson to layout the lands to be claimed when the Cherokees were removed. Coffee's archive of the Indian Removal was sold in 2009 by Heritage Gallery Auctions. It contained the following description:

"The first of Coffee's assignments included in this archive was his journey to Georgia to gather information on a Cherokee and Creek boundary dispute. According to an autograph letter signed by Coffee (a retained copy) to Georgia Governor John Forsyth, dated November 3, 1829, Coffee had instructions from Secretary of War John Eaton to "proceed to the Cherokee Nation and collect such testimony as I may be able to obtain relative to the boundary line between the lands of the Creek Nation and those of the Cherokees, and to forward the same to the Gov't to enable them to determine with more certainty on the true line between those nations wherein the State of Georgia has of late become interested, and between whom and the Cherokees there exists a difference of opinion, and a clashing of interest."

The result of Coffee's information gathering assignment might have been the two maps (included) along with one "Memo. of Indian Treaties - Treaties with the Cherokee Nation", ca. 1830. One map is labeled "Rough draft of the country in dispute", (15.5" x 12", n.d.) showing the northwest corner of Georgia, including the names of rivers (such as the Tennessee and the Chattahoochee), streams, towns, ferries, the "old federal road", and boundaries. The other map, labeled "Corrected sketch of Cherokee Country" shows the same region, but with greater detail. This second map labels the state lines of Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia, as well as Cherokee boundary lines (such as a "Line claimed by the Cherokees" and the "New York boundary with the Creeks in 1790"). Other boundary lines are also drawn on the map, but are unnamed. These lines are, however, described in the accompanying "Memo. of Indian Treaties". The memo also gives further boundary descriptions from eight previous Cherokee treaties, all dated from the Treaty of Fort Wilkinson of 1782 through the Treaty at the Creek Agency of 1818. Most of the details in the "Memo." can be found on the map."

      • In a letter by Hugh Montgomery to Governor Gilmer from the Cherokee Agency 13 Sept 1830:

"P.S. Jack Wright has lived in the nation upwards of forty years"

"Jack Wright (Hightower) has considerable financial resources"

      • Cherokee agency Oct 1830: "Persons allowed to remain in the Cherokee nation" (page 37) are:

Another item of interest is the following transfer of Elizabeth Bryant's interest in her father's estate. Elizabeth was married to Ranson Cain. Her share passed to her older brother John Bryan (from Jeanne L Bryan Insalaco's site):

07/30/1831 Relinquishment to an interest in the estate of John Bryan. Ransom Cain of Habersham County, from this day sold and transferred to John Bryan all rights and interest which I as one of the heirs of my father, John Bryan, deceased, relinquish my right and title and interest... Signed: Ransom (x) Cain, Eliz (x) Cain... Witness: Joel M. Bryan, Rebecca (x) Bryan, James Bryan, J. P... Recorded: October 14, 1831. (Source: Deed Book, LL, pg. 12)

(Note: As this was from the estate of John Bryan, father of Elizabeth Bryan Cain, why did the deed seem to read to Ransom Cain (her husband) and not her? Why did her deed not say, my father, John Bryan?)"

This 1831 transaction is the last dated reference I have for John Bryan, Jr.

This is the end of the section of John Bryan who married Nancy Mayes; who was the son of Rev War Soldier John Byran and father of Joel Mayes Bryan.

I am proposing that John Bryan son of RWS John was in Habersham GA in 1820 and 1830 (with wife Nancy Mayes and son Joel Mayes Bryan. Joel Mayes Bryan (and mother Nancy) immigrate to Indian Territory in 1832 (based on the Chronicles of Oklahoma data above). In 1830 James Bryan sells to Joel Mayes Bryan his interest in the estate of John Bryan RWS. On might conclude that this is because Joel Mayes Byran father -- John Bryan -- is deceased and Joel is his only heir -- giving Joel Mayes Bryan a 2/8ths share in the estate. I cannot find any references to John Bryan after my allegation of his appearance on the 1830 Habersham census. Further there are the two Cherokee agency lists that show a John Bryan with numerous children in Cherokke land in the early 1830s AND a John Bryan on the 1830 Federal census of Habersham.

Cat Tindell in 1999 on www.genforum.com/cain (here) gives an extremely detailed genealogy of Joseph Ransom Cain and his siblings. The descendent are listed by Tindell are shown below. Eleven children are shown by Tindell. Other genealogies of this family do not enumerate as many children. I have listed all the children on Tindell's list with the stated grandchildren. I have noted census and other confirmations as I have been able to find them. Additionally I have noted conflicting parentages.

The 1840 Hall census show only four sons (William, John, Ransom, and maybe Mathew ?) born between 1825 and 1835 and one female daughter (Alpha)

      Children:

1a. Mary Ann Cain (born between 1815-1820)
Tindel says thus daughter married Martin W Free, see Nancy Ann below:
      1b.Nancy Ann Cain (1821 - 1898)
[Note on Tindell this is the census name for Martin Free's wife
Tindell says Mary -- data above right]
      Married 1841 Martin W Free (1821-after 1880 GA)
This says Martin Free and Nancy Ann Cain were married in 1841 and Nancy was born 1815-1820.

The census says she was born in 1821. However, there is only one daughter shown for Ransom Cain and Elizabeth Bryan. It could be Alpha (below and on the 1860 census with her parents) or this Nancy. Alpha appears with parents in 1860 confirming here parentage.

But Nancy has a daughter named Alpha.

      here on ancestry.com

Considerable information on James Bryan has been gathered by Jeanne L Bryan Insalaco. See her site http://www.genealogy.com/users/b/r/y/Jeanne-L-Bryaninsalaco/.

      From there

"We know that our James Bryan was married in Franklin County, Georgia. His Pension file for his service in the War of 1812 contains the following information: James Bryan "...declares that he is married; that his wife's name was Elizabeth Cain, to whom he was married at Franklin County, Georgia, on or about the 1st day of October, 1818". So this would show that our Bryan family had at least some connection to Franklin County, which was settled before Lumpkin County."

      and

"James enlisted as a volunteer in the War with Great Britain and the Creek Indians in 1813. He served as a sergeant in the company commanded by Captain Benjamin Cleveland, Jr., in the 1st regiment of the Georgia Militia, which was commanded by Colonel Samuel Groves. He volunteered and was mustered into service at Carnesville, Franklin County, on August 24, 1813 and originally signed up for a term of 6 months.

He was listed as present for the Muster Roll Call for the period ending September 30, 1813, but is marked as absent with leave on the Muster Roll Call of March 3, 1814, with sickness given as the reason. the Company Pay Roll for August 1813, to March 1814 indicates that his service terminated on March 3, 1814 and that he served a total of 6 months and 11 days. His pay was $11.00 per month and he received a total of $74.08 for his war service.

James Bryan was honorable discharged at Fort Hawkins, Milledgeville, Georgia on March 3, 1814."

      and

"Col. Bryan served in the war of 1812 and also the Florida war, he was commissioned major of the 98th batillion of militia, Jan. 28, 1830 by Gov. George R. Gilmer, also commissioned Colonel of the 79th regiment of militia by Gov. Wilson Lumpkin on july 17,1835. moved to Lumpkin co.immediately after the removal of the Cherokee indians and held the responsible trust for several years of his life, by commission from the Gov. of the state, as one of the Justices of the Inferior Court. fiche, pg.1606"

James married Elizabeth Cain (1800-1882) in 1818 in Franklin GA.

James resided in Lumpkin County Georgia in the later years of his life (censuses of 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880). As he was married in Franklin County in 1818, his location on the censuses is difficult as there is no 1820 or 1830 Franklin census data. Habersham County was formed in 1818, the same year as his marriage. there are several transaction for James that place him in Habersham from the Jeanne L Bryan Insalaco data:

      • James is in Franklin here:

01/09/1818 Deed from John Mayes of Franklin, County, Ga. to James Bryan of same. In consideration of $375 dollars, conveys 250 acres in Franklin Co., on Wards Creek, adjoining Samuel Ward, granted to John Mayes. Deed dated January 9, 1818... Recorded: August 12, 1819... Witness: John Bryan, Tarrant Bryant (x), P. Naylor... Sworn to by John Bryan before Tryone Patterson, J. P., July 24, 1819 that Polydore Naylor was a subscribing witness to the above. (Source: Deeds of Franklin Co., Ga. 1784-1826, pg. 391)

      • Then in Habersham County:

"We are grieved to learn that this veteran soldier was unable to attend the exercises on Lee's birthday on account of serious sickness. We hope for him a speedy recovery. He is now in his 94th year and on November the 1st walked to town to be present at the bestowal of the Southern Crosses of Honor. One little girl of the graded school was so impressed with his appearance that on returning home after the ceremony at the church, said, 'Mama, I do think somebody might have carried him home in an auto after he had walked so far.'"

"Tarrance Bryan has granted unto the said James Bryan his heirs and assigns the one undivided eighth part of all that tract, lot, or parcel of land situated, lying and being in the twenty seventh district (27th) of originally Lee, now Sumter County, in said State of Georgia, known and distinguished in the plan and original survey of said district by the number one hundred & seventy-five (175).

The lot and section reference are obviously the same property conveyed to John Bryan by the original land grant. I neglected to mention it when I spoke to you on the phone last night since I have not read this Tarrance Bryan deed in several years, but the underlined portion above indicated that John Bryan left eight heirs to this property upon his death, and that Tarrance is conveying his one-eight share to our James Bryan. ·The date of the original grant to John Bryan is April 17, 1835. The deed from Tarrance to James Bryan is dated April 15, 1837."

    6. Thomas Bryan

The primary indication of this son of John Bryan is his appearance as the son "Thomas" named on father John Bryan's 1825 will along with brother "Hetto".

Many people identify this son Thomas as the Thomas Byran of Walker County GA. I believe this is incorrect.

For example, this Genealogy of the Bryan and Martin Families by Greg Martin and this rootsweb site state:

      "THOMAS BRYAN, JR.
b 11-12-1793 d 5-25-1878 in Walker County, GA. He was in Capt. Waters Co., Booth Reg. McIntoch Division during the War of 1812. He enlisted 14 Nov 1814 and was dischared 6 May 1815. He also was a Capt in the Local Militia District in 1836 during the Creek Wars. He is buried in Bryan Cemetery, 8 miles south of Lafayette, GA. He was married twice. His first wife was Mary Dooley who died 23 July 1844. He married THOMASIN GROGAN 8 Aug, 1847 in Elbert Co., GA. Thomasin was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Blackwell Grogan."

The inclusion of this Thomas as the son of John Bryan is often based on a identical War of 1812 service record as John's known son Tarrence Bryan:

      Consider the following:

      • Tarrance Bryan's record says:

        War of 1812 4th Regiment (Col. Booth's)
Muster Rolls, Capt John Walter's Company of Infantry
        Nov 21 1814 to May 6 1815 or (May 20 1815)

On 4th Regiment of Booth's Georgia Militia - Fort Hawkins - Nov 1814 (from usgwarchive) are:

        Bryan, Tarrent
        Bryan, Thomas

Also, MILITARY GEORGIA - 1812 Roster (usgwarchives) says:

BRYAN TARRANTS 4 REGIMENT (BOOTH'S), GA MIL. CORPORAL
BRYAN THOMAS 4 REGIMENT (BOOTH'S), GA MIL. PRIVATE

      • This says: /

        "Mike Patterson
        Bryan; Dooly
Descendants of Thomas BRYAN, Sr. of Walker County; and his son, Thomas BRYAN, Jr. (1793-1878). Thomas BRYAN, Jr.'s wife, Mary (DOOLY) BRYAN (1795-1844) died in Walker County. Mary's father, William DOOLY (b. ca 1770) was a resident of Walker in 1840. Does anyone have a photograph of Thomas BRYAN (1793-1878)? I am a descendant of his son, James Tillman BRYAN (1817-1906> of Chickamauga. -- Mike Patterson, 2205 Glade Road, Colleyville, TX 76034-4569"

This site also says here that Thomas Bryan (1755-after 1845) was the father of Thomas Bryan (1793-1878)

      • The History of Boone County, Arkansas by Roger V. Logan says:

"The Bryans lived in north Georgia since the 1780s when Thomas Bryan settled in Elbert County after serving in the Revolutionary War. Thomas Bryan, Jr. (1793-1878) served in the war of 1812 and then moved to Walker County in 1832."

      • There is a Thomas Bryan, Sr. of Franklin County who was a Revolutionary War Soldier and drew land in the 1838 Cherokee Land Lottery (see "Roster of Revoloutionary Soldiers in Georgia", Vol. III, page 311)

In the 1832 Land Lottery is:

lot no. 43 Thomas Bryan, Sen., r. s., Sewell's, Franklin.*

drew land in the 10th District 1st section, Cherokee

      • Two Thomas Byran's Census data:

Shown below are: (A) the Thomas Bryan of Franklin GA in 1830 and 1840; and (B) the two Thomas Byrans living together in Habersham in 1830 and Walker in 1840. I believe the two men in (b) are the Walker County Thomas Bryan father-son pair and ARE NOT necessarily related to the John Bryan of Franklin. I belive the (a) Thomas Bryan is the son of John Bryan -- the Revolutionary War soldier of Franklin GA.

Children are of the wrong age and sex for the Thomas on the 1840 Franklin Census
this states that this may be Thomas Patrich Bryan and Emily "Unity" Darsey
son of Thomas Bryan (1775-1844 Laurens GA) and Margaret Simpson

I believe this excludes Thomas Bryan of Walker County GA from being the Thomas Bryan mentioned in the 1825 will of John Bryan. So where is the Franklin County GA Thomas later? While there are many tempting candidates above, nothing seems available about this Thomas after the 1840 Franklin GA census

      • For reference this rootsweb entry provides a similar descendancy list as the Genealogy of the Bryan and Martin Families site by Greg Martin.

Children of Thomas Bryan, Jr. and Mary Dooley

        1. James Tilman Bryan (1817 Habersham GA-1905 Walker GA) m his cousin Elizabeth Ann Dooley
        2. William McDooley Bryan (1819 Habersham GA- ), lived in Walker Co., married Jane E. Mabry
        3. Rial Madison Bryan (1822 Walker-1910 Texas), went to Texas
        4. Jesse Upson Bryan (1821 Habersham-1908 TN), married Mary Kelly. Went to Franklin Co., TN
        5. Sarah Ann Bryan (1838 Walker-1839), b 14 May 1838 d 2 May 1839
        6. Asa L. Bryan (1839 Walker GA-1861 Halifax VA), b 25 Dec 1839 d Fairfax Co., VA 1 Oct, 1861 (?Civil War)
Children of Thomas Bryan, Jr. and Thomasin Grogan
        1. Leander C. Bryan (1848 Walker GA-1923)
        2. Augustus Grogan Bryan, (1849 Walker GA-1928 Hamilton TN)
        3. Mary E. Bryan (1851 Walker-1852)
        4. Greenberry G. Bryan (1853 Walker-1881 Walker)
        5. Emma J. "Phenie" Bryan (1855 Walker-1896)
        6. Louisa Jane Bryan (1856 Walker GA-1858)
        7. Julia Catherine Bryan (1860 Walker GA-1860)
        8. Thomas Pinckney Bryan (1862 Walker GA-1887 Walker GA)
        9. Robert Willie Bryan (1866 Walker GA-1887 Walker)

    7. Other Possible Children of John and Nancy Bryan

      Margie von Marenholtz states (here):

"Besides Illac (Illai?Ely?)and Thomas in Will, land records indicate other children were Joel M., John, Rebecca, Elizabeth (Mrs. Ransom Cain) & most likely James Bryan (husb of Elizabeth Cain)."

I think the "Rebecca" is a mistaken reference to Joel Mayes Bryan's wife (Rebecca Wright) who was a witness with husband Joel Mayes Bryan to John Bryan. Jr.'s (Joel's father) acquisition of his sister Elizabeth Cain's share of their father's estate of (John Bryan RWS) in 1831. I also disagree about Joel Mayes Bryan being a son of John Bryan RWS. I think Joel was his grandson and son of John, Jr.

The 1825 will and subsequent transaction indicate there are 8 legatees of the will (and thus perhaps 8 children). I have accounted for ONLY six:

      1. John, Jr: who married Nancy Mayes; is on the 1820 and 1830 Habersham census; and Franklin tax list in 1807 as John Bryan, Jr.
      2. Elizabeth who married Ransom Cain
      3. James: well documented in Lumpkin county GA and appears in many land transaction
      4. Tarrence: who married Polly Shade then Elizabeth Patterson; who transferred his share of John Bryan's estate to brother James in 1837
      5. Hetto: who is mentioned in the 1825 will
      6. Thomas: who is mentioned in the 1825 will

Thus far I have only one new candidate:

      • Harrison Bryan (1802-1867)

This could be a missing son of John Bryan RWS, based on the proximity of this Harrison Bryan(t) on the 1830 Gwinnett census to nearby Nancy Bryan (wife of John Bryan). On the census, Harrison is five lines away from Nancy and John's son Hetto -- who are adjacent. Further, Nicholas Bryan (son of Hetto) is shown in the 1860 Atlanta census in the home of Dewitt Clinton Rutledge -- brother of Mary Rutledge, Harrison Bryan's wife (if these facts are correct, Mary (Rutledge) Bryan is Nicholas Bryan's aunt, and Nicholas his living with his aunt's brother)

Most web sites say Harrison was born in Franklin County GA and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta GA. He married 1828 Mary Rutledge ("Polly")(1805-1899 Atlanta) daughter of Revolutionary War soldier Joseph (John) Rutledge (1770 SC-1852 GA) and Mary Hearn (1775 Abbeville SC-1853) (see this, this, and this). She married second Rueben Davidson (or Donaldson) (1799-1877 Gwinnett GA) in Gwinnett in 1871 (her deceased sister Elizabeth's husband). Joseph (John) Rutledge appears in Gwinnett in 1820, 1830 and 1850)

The 1840 census below shows 4 sons and 3 daughters. I can document only the four who appeared on the 1850 DeKalb census.

She was a consistent member of the First Street Methodist Church, and lived an exemplary Christian life, being known throughout the city for her charitable disposition, always lending a helping hand to those in need. • Abner Bickham's Burke County Georgia Militia

One plausible identification of John Bryan's Revolutionary war service is found in a Burke County Georgia muster roll. RootsWeb has the Captain Abner Bickham's muster roll:

Source: Georgians in the Revolution: At Kettle Creek (Wilkes Co.) and Burke County By
      Robert Scott Davis, Jr.
      page 168

Only a few militia rolls have survived for Burke County during the American Revolution.
(Here) is one such roll from the War Department Collection of Revolutionary War Records,
Record Group 93, National Archives. The roll of Bickham's company was originally found in
his Revolutionary War pension file, GAS 30274. For other rolls and related records of
Burke County see Robert S. Davis, Jr., "Georgia Citizens and Soldiers of the American
Revolution" (Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1979)

The Bickham roll was originally published in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly
(1960):101,. Omitted from the abstract below is the amount paid each soldier per month.
Captain Bickham received $40, each of his lieutenants earned $23 2/3, and each private's
pay was $9. Also omitted was the amount of subsistence money for the three officers
(due to lack of space). Bickham received $10, the two lieutenants $5.

    • 2nd Georgia Battalion -- Continental Line (1779-1780)

A John "Bryant" appears on the rolls of the 2nd Georgia Battalion -- Continental Line

"Pay Role of the Field Commisioned Staff and Non-Commisioned Officers & Privates belonging to the 2nd Continental Georgia Battalion under the command of Col. Samuel Elbert from the first day of May to the first day of July 1779

The roll is found at footnote.com, "Revolutionary War Rolls, Georgia, 2d Battalion (1779-80)", page 3. John Bryant's signature is shown below:

    • Other States

      • South Carolina -- no John Bryan or John Bryant
      • North Carolina

There is a "John Bryant" in:

1st Battalion North Carolina Continental Line (1775-1783)
Roll of Colonel Thomas Clark's Company
        September 8th 1778

Based on names alone the only John Bryan in GA, SC or NC is the one in Abner Bickham's Burke County Georgia Militia

  • The Case of Two Nancy Byrans

There appears to considerable confusion about the Nancy -- the wife of John Bryan (the one with the 1825 Franklin will). I consider most documentation on John Brayan of Franklin County GA -- Revolutionary War soldier to have a wife named Nancy -- BUT not Nancy Mayes -- who I believe is married to his son John Bryan. Consider:

  • The Anis Brown Tree

  • ANIS BROWN'S ANCESTORS
    1. BROWN

Anis Brown's ancestors are reasonably well documented. Her father Meredith Brown (1805-before 1880) was the son of Peter Brown. Peter Brown was born in 1768 Belfast Township, Edgefield District (96 District) SC. Peter was the son of immigrant John Brown who was a Captain in the militia in South Carolina during the Revolutionary war.

      1. Meredith Brown 1808-1880

Meredith G. Brown was born November 10, 1804 in GA, and died Bef. 1880 in GA. He married Sarah R. Crow April 16, 1827, daughter of Joshua Crow and Anis Browning. She was born March 30, 1809 in GA, and died Aft. 1880 in GA.

John Brown was born in northen Ireland around 1740 and married in 1762 in Ireland Martha Conley?

They came to America in Feb 1763 and produced certificates of being members of the Protestant Congregation in Ireland to settle in the Protestant Irish Colony in SC in Boonesborough, Belfast Township. In Original list of Protestant Immigrants to SC 1763-1773 by Janie Revill, 1939, found in the State Dept. of Archives and History, Atlanta GA., pg 107-109 is:

Council Journal 34, page 70-78 Meeting of 23rd February 1768

The following persons presented petitions to his excellency setting forth that they were protestants and had arrived in this province from Ireland in the snow Gregg, John Monford Master on the encouragement and Bounty given by aan Act of the General Assembly passed the 25th July 1761 that prayers of the petition were granted and the public Treasurer was ordered to pay their Bounties of four pounds and two pounds sterling according to their respective ages in consideration of their passages to this province to Messrs Torrans and Pouag in behalf of the owners of said snow and the remaining twenty shillings to themselves agreeable to the directions of the said act.

A list of passengers follows, adjacent in the list are:

        John Brown 32
        Mary Brown 31
        John Brown 4
        Henry Brown 25
        Margaret Brown 27
        Jane Brown 16
        Samuel Brown 15

The following section on Page 100 identifies the same ship owners but the snow (a brig i.e., merchant ship with square sails) is named Betty Gregg. The ship is identified (here) as sailing from Larne, Antrim Northern Ireland (a coastal port north of Belfast) on Oct. 4, 1767 and arrived in Charleston Feb 2, 1768. Some of the passengers revieved land in Cravens County NC. But many received "poor Protestant" land grants according to the 1761 act above in South Carolina. The Betty Gregg was a British ship of 100 tons with a crew of 14 build in 1763 (see this)

He was a Revolutionary Soldier in SC served several tours in 1779-1781. Stub Entries of SC Soldiers Book I pg, 220 by Salley Issued May 4 1785; Book R, pg. 343; Book W, pg. 209.
Moved to Georgia in 1786 and in 1790 drew land in Franklin County.
He drew land in 1820 Land Lottery in GAwhile a resident of Franklin County.
Shown in Knight's Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers of GA with son Meredith.
