  • ANOTHER SHOT AT CARBON LIMITS
    Just when it seemed like a carbon emissions law was another victim of Washington gridlock, a new compromise version is taking shape in the Senate. Craig Pirrong, a finance professor at UH Bauer College and Director of Energy Markets for the UH-Global Energy Management Institute, says this mixture of market-based pricing for carbon emissions and a carbon fee on fuel could be a workable combination. He has written about the advantages of using a fixed fee on emissions to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide. The lack of detail on the Senate proposals so far, makes it difficult to gauge their ultimate impact.

  • TOYOTA AND OTHERS TURN TO TWEETING TO ANSWER CONSUMER COMPLAINTS
    After weeks of negative publicity related to a string of recalled vehicles, Toyota has turned to social media website Twitter in an attempt to repair its brand image. The Japanese auto giant has launched “Toyota Conversations,” a branded channel on TweetMeme, aggregating all conversations on Twitter related to Toyota. Several companies have recently made use of social media platforms to dialogue directly with consumers, especially in the wake of backlash, according to UH Bauer associate professor Partha Krishnamurthy, who does research in consumer behavior and customer insights.
