Bernard A. Harris Jr., M.D., is an accomplished NASA astronaut, physician and businessman. He is president and CEO of Vesalius Ventures, Inc., a business accelerator for medical informatics and technology, and president of the Harris Foundation, a non-profit organization that invests in American youth. Harris has conducted research at NASA for a decade in musculoskeletal physiology and disuse osteoporosis and developed in-flight medical devices to extend astronaut stays in space. A veteran astronaut for over eleven years, he has logged more than 438 hours and traveled over 7.2 million miles in space. On his second flight, Harris conducted the first telemedicine conference from space with the Mayo Clinic. Harris is chairman of the Science Advisory Board of Kodiak Technologies, senior consultant for NASA Aerospace Safety Panel, and a member of the NASA Biological and Physical Sciences Committee, the NIH National Institute for Deafness and Communications Disorders, the National Academies Institute of Medicine and on the board of directors for the Medical Informatics, Technology and Applications Center. He also holds several faculty appointments, including positions at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Baylor College of Medicine, and has authored numerous scientific publications. He has a bachelor of science in biology from the University of Houston, a master of medical science from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, a master of business administration (MBA) from the University of Houston-Clear Lake and a doctorate of medicine from Texas Tech University School of Medicine. He completed a Residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, a National Research Council Fellowship in Endocrinology at the NASA Ames Research Center and trained as a Flight Surgeon at the Aerospace School of Medicine, Brooks Air Force Base. He is also a licensed private pilot. Harris has served as vice president and chief scientist of SPACEHAB, Inc., where he directed the company’s space science business and helped develop and market space-based products and services. During his tenure, the company grew from 60 to 800 employees with annual revenue of over $100 million. He also served as vice -President of business development for Space Media, Inc., an Informatics company, establishing an e-commerce initiative that is now part of the United Nations’ education program. Throughout his career, he has received numerous recognitions, including the election as Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the 2000 Horatio Alger Award.
