EMBA in leadership curriculum

The goals of the Executive MBA program are to provide graduates with…

  1. Effective written communication skills,
  2. The ability to integrate different functional areas in solving business problems,
  3. Critical thinking skills to analyze business situations and recommend appropriate action,
  4. An awareness of the environment of business, including areas such as law, politics, culture, and technology,
  5. The ability to identify ethical issues, evaluate them, and propose alternative courses of action.

The Executive MBA programs at the Bauer College of Business do not follow a traditional semester schedule. Instead, they work on an intense mini-semester schedule called modules. These modules focus on one class at a time.

There are 16 modules consisting of 48 credit hours. These courses cannot be waived even if taken at a prior time or during a previous degree plan. Students will be notified prior to the next module which courses will be taken next. Book pick up will occur on the last day of each module.

All aspects of the program (dates, times, classrooms, etc.) and course curriculum (scheduling, courses offered, course ordering, instructors & materials) are subject to change without prior notice.

ANALYTICAL TOOLS:

Managerial Economics

An overview of current economic conditions that affect business on a global scale. The class consists of a mixture of analytical and practical applications of economic theories.

Statistical Analysis

A survey of statistical methods for understanding probabilities in business through applicable data usage.

ORGANIZATIONAL FUNCTIONS:

Understanding Financial Information

Introduction to transaction analysis, recording, preparation, and understanding of basic financial statements.

Strategic Finance

Strategic finance equips real world managers to deal with practical and strategic aspects of financing choice, dividends, stock repurchases, restructuring, mergers and acquisitions in an international context. The use of real options in capital budgeting and investment analysis and the means available to managers to hedge risk are discussed. The basics of valuing derivatives and their use in corporate risk management are also covered in this course.

Strategic Management

This capstone course integrates the learned concepts of production, marketing, financial, and behavioral models within a framework provided by the theory of complex organization and will be culminated by a project.

Managerial Finance

Managerial Finance introduces students to the basic tools that are needed to evaluate and implement optimal financial decisions by firms. The focus is on value creation through optimal investment, capital structure and distribution policy decisions. Topics include the basics of time value of money, cash flows and capital budgeting, risk and its effect on valuation, market efficiency, capital structure and dividend policy.

Marketing

An introduction to the basic concepts of marketing management, a key focus is on identifying the marketing problems and decisions faced by organizations and to illustrate the application of marketing concepts to managerial decision making.

MIS

This course provides a managerial perspective on the effective use of information systems for strategic advantage and operational performance in organizations.

Supply Chain Management

Supply Chain Management introduces the challenges of managing operating activities of manufacturing and service organizations. Examples of operating issues include forecasting demand, choosing business locations, managing manufacturing and distribution inventories, improving product and service quality, scheduling production and staffing, and managing projects.

Organizational Behavior

This class focuses on important variables and dynamics at three levels: individual, interpersonal and groups, and organization. Students will facilitate improvements in managerial and organizational effectiveness through an understanding and appreciation of the field of organizational behavior.

Cost Management

This class provides an overview of cost accounting methods and techniques that support organizational control and managerial decision-making.

BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT:

Business Law and Ethics

A new addition to the EMBA curriculum, Business Law was introduced to provide analysis of legal problems which surround businesses with an emphasis on the study of legislation, court decisions, and regulations that impacts business decisions.

International Environment of Business

International Business is an introduction to the major social, political, legal, ethical, and cultural dimensions of the changing world environment and the impact of these decisions on business.

International Business Residency

Students participate in a one week long international experience that exposes them to relevant socioeconomic, cultural, and political aspects of business. This trip is project-based and a mandatory part of the curriculum.

Leadership Effectiveness:

Negotiations

This course focuses on the study and application of models relevant to effective negotiations and communication. Topics to be discussed include a diagnosis of bargaining contexts and styles to prepare for bargaining situations.

Leadership

This course is designed to introduce you to the various philosophies and practices of leadership and the role ethics plays in modern corporations. Topics to be discussed include empowerment, team leadership, ethical issues, gender differences, cross-cultural leadership, and managing diversity.

Corporate Politics

At the conclusion of this course, students will have acquired the ability to identify power bases and political relationships in organizations; identified the relationships between organizational culture, power and politics; learned to effectively employ the strategies and tactics necessary to facilitate attaining personal goals while concurrently meeting organizational objectives; and acquired an understanding of the value of these skills within an organizational context.
