Evaluation of Degree Candidates
Consistent with college Guidelines, each candidate will be formally evaluated on an annual basis. This evaluation will encompass the following aspects of the students' performance:
- Coursework
- Performance as a teaching/research assistant
- Attendance at and participation in research/seminar series held by the Department of Accountancy & Taxation
- Progress on the dissertation (if applicable)
Form of the Evaluation
The evaluation will be conducted by the Departmental Ph.D. Committee. After considering all relevant information, including that provided by the chairperson of that candidate's Advisory Committee or Dissertation Committee (whichever is applicable), one of four recommendations will be provided:
- The candidate's progress is satisfactory in all regards, and the candidate should be retained in the program.
- The candidate's progress is unsatisfactory in some regards, and the candidate should be carefully counseled and monitored to eliminate these deficiencies.
- The candidate's progress is unsatisfactory and gives cause for serious concern, and the candidate should be placed on probation with a specified time for correcting the noted deficiencies.
- The candidate's progress does not warrant continuation in the program and the candidate should be dismissed from the program.
Written copies of the evaluation will be transmitted to the candidate and the chairperson of that candidate's Advisory Committee or Dissertation Committee (whichever is appropriate). In conjunction with college Guidelines, a copy of this evaluation will also be transmitted to the Associate Dean for Academic and Research Programs.
Dismissal from Program
In the event that the recommendation of the Ph.D. Committee is dismissal from the program, this decision will be reviewed by the Ph.D. Committee, who will provide a second recommendation. At that time, the matter will be considered by the tenure-track faculty in the Department of Accountancy & Taxation. A majority vote to dismiss the candidate from the program will result in a recommendation for dismissal. Consistent with college Policies (see Section 7.30), the action of dismissing a candidate from doctoral program is the responsibility of the Associate Dean for Academic and Research Program.
