Melvyn joined his family's partnership in Star Furniture Company in 1956. Following the death of his father and another partner, Melvyn became president of the company in 1962 when Star's revenue was less than $2 million. Along with his sister, Shirley Toomim, he bought out the other partners in 1964. In 1997, the company was sold to the Berkshire Hathaway Company, managed by famed investor, Warren Buffett. Melvyn remains in the management role of Chairman/CEO of Star.
Melvyn is very active in the Houston community and serves on the board of many organizations, including the Ronald McDonald House. He is on the Dean’s Executive Advisory Board of the University of Houston's C. T. Bauer College of Business and is president of the UH College of Business Foundation.
Melvyn’s other community activities include being a member of the board of visitors at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the Jewish Geriatric Foundation and the Development Board of the University of Texas Health Sceince Center. In addition, he is past president of Congregation Beth Israel and vice president of the American Cancer Society, Houston.
Melvyn Wolff is a native Houstonian, born in 1931. He attended San Jacinto High School and Wentworth Military School.
After spending one year at the University of Texas, he earned his bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Houston in 1953. He proudly served as a lieutenant in the Army and was stationed in Korea for one of his two years’ service. |
