MS in Finance Application Checklist

A faculty committee with the Department of Finance will evaluate applicants to the Master of Science (MS) in Finance on several factors, including academic achievement as evidenced by transcripts from each college or university the applicant has attended, standardized test scores, and career objectives.

All applications MUST be completed by Admissions deadlines

Fall Admissions Spring Admissions

April 1 International Students

October 1 International Students

May 1 Domestic Students

November 15  Domestic Students

International applicants need to apply by April 1 st for Fall admissions or October 1 for Spring admissions a due to Visa paperwork. Applications are not complete until all required materials are received.
All applicants must follow steps I thru III for a complete application:

I.  Submit an Online Application for Graduate Studies & Pay the Application Fee.
All applications & payments are done Online thru the Texas Common Application

A $75.00 Bauer College of Business application fee is required from all applicants. International applicants pay an additional $75.00 fee directed to International Admissions for transcripts evaluation, for a total fee of $150.00.  Payment must be made online when application is submitted.  Only applicants whose fees have been paid will be reviewed.

Please make sure that you use an email address that you check frequently, all correspondence on regards to your application and throughout the program will be done thru the email you put on your application.

II. Take the following Tests and request official scores to be send to our University.

We will accept GMAT or GRE scores if they have been taken within the last five years. If they were taken more than five years ago, the applicant must take the GMAT again.

  • GMAT* Test
    Scores should be sent to University of Houston, MS in Finance Program code XT1-26-15.  Information regarding the Graduate Management Admission Test can be obtained from their web site:  www.mba.com or by calling 1-800-717-4628 (GMAT) 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.  The GMAT is a computer-adapted test which is offered on an appointment basis.
  • TOEFL Test   (ONLY for international students unless they have a U.S. degree)
    Scores should be sent to University of Houston, Main Campus code 6870. Information on the Test of English as a Foreign Language can be obtained from their web site: www.toefl.org. TOEFL scores submitted may not be more than two years old.

*The GMAT test needs to be taken at least 4 weeks prior to the deadline. The suggested minimum GMAT score is 600GRE scores will ONLY be accepted if the GRE was previously taken for another graduate degree within the past five years. Applicants who took GRE more than five years prior to the MS Finance application must take the GMAT. Expect a three or four week period time between taking the test and UH receiving the score.

III. Send a package containing the following four (4) requirements to:

  1. Official Academic Transcripts from your undergraduate degree and any other graduate work completed. They must come in an official sealed envelope. The University requires official transcripts from the institutions where students completed their last 60 undergraduate semester hours (90 quarter hours) toward the bachelor’s degree, and transcripts from all previously completed graduate coursework.  Electronically transmitted transcripts will speed up the admissions process if that option is available from your institutions.   The transcripts for schools from which you have earned degrees should indicate degree received.  If you have not completed your bachelor’s degree at the time that you apply for admission, your official degree-posted transcript should be sent no later than the beginning of the semester in which you enroll in the program.  Transcripts will also be required from the university where you completed calculus.  Students without calculus must complete this prerequisite or a credit exam covering this material prior to beginning any Master's level coursework.  Graduates of UH with transcripts on file at the University do not need to submit new transcripts unless requested by the Office of Admissions.
  2. Professional Resume or curriculum vitae. It is recommended (not required) that students have at least two  years of full-time relevant professional work experience before applying to the master's program.
  3. Goal Statement Letter which specifies what the applicant expects to accomplish by completing this program and how it is related to his or her long term professional objectives is required.
  4. 2 Letter of Recommendation from professional sources familiar with the applicant’s background and potential for advancement are required. Please ask your referrals to give you the letters signed and sealed to be included in the package instead of sending them individually. There is no required form to use for the letters of recommendation.

* If you have already taken the GMAT test, please include an unofficial copy of your scores with this package.

  1. An additional $75 international application fee, which should automatically appear on your online application if you correctly apply as International.
  2. Official TOEFL Score of 620 or higher (or 260 on the computerized test) or IELTS Overall Band Score of 7.5.  Scores over 2 years old will not be accepted.

  4. Statement of Understanding
  5. Transfer form
  6. Overseas Address Form
  7. Letter of Financial Backing
  8. Permission Release Form
  9. Two (2) Passport photos
