Responsibilities will require only limited travel (less than 20%). Our salaries are comparable with other much larger firms and all overtime is paid. 2010 Esther R. Sawyer Manuscript Completion Award Competition from IIA Research Foundation

Good morning all!

The IIA Research Foundation (IIARF) is pleased to announce the 2010 Esther R. Sawyer Manuscript Completion Award Competition.

Students wishing to compete in the annual Esther R. Sawyer Award can only do so if they are entering or currently enrolled at the University of Houston (or another IAEP Partner Level school) as undergraduates or graduates, have completed the Internal Auditing Certificate or will do so by May, 2010, or will be completing the Internal Audit/Risk Track for the MS Accountancy Program in 2010.

Students are asked to submit an original manuscript on a specified topic, which is related to modern internal auditing.  The topic for 2010 is as follows:

What lessons should internal auditors learn from the current financial crisis? What opportunities for improvement exist for the internal audit (IA) profession in the risk management and governance arenas?  What corrections should be made moving forward to:

a.       better prevent such a global crisis from occurring in the future?
b.       enhance IA’s value to stakeholders and senior management?

The 2010 Esther R. Sawyer Manuscript Completion Award carries a cash prize of US $5,000 to the award winner, and the award winner is invited to attend the annual International Conference (registration and travel expenses are paid for).

Basic Function:  This position is responsible for assisting settlements, confirmation and accounts payable with filing, pre-audit testing, analytics and special projects as dictated by business needs.

Principal Accountabilities

Essential Functions:

  • File documents
  • Prepare spreadsheets, sort and pivot data
  • Analyze internal data for performance indicators and metrics
  • Perform validations and testing on historical data, files, policy requirements
  • Reconcile data elements from various internal systems
  • Perform invoice validations on auto pay invoices
  • General data entry
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations
  • Contact counterparties for prior period adjustment support
  • Copy invoices for submission to accounts payable
  • Perform special project as dictated by business needs 
Qualifications/Know-How
  • Actively pursuing Accounting/Finance/Business degree from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience with filing and general data entry.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access.
  • Effective communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Energetic, self motivated team player with an eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Good problem solving skills with the initiative to investigate analyze and resolve issues.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, focused on teamwork, research and problem solving. 
Nature & Scope
 Hands-on position requiring strong organizational skills. Excellent filing skills. Works independently. Should be flexible and able to switch quickly from one task to another when dictated by business needs. Involves cross-departmental interaction with internal departments. Scope includes oversight of pre-audit testing for historical transactions, assist with internal billing reclasses, reconciliations, reporting and analysis across multiple entities.

DATES: Friday, May 29th / Friday, August 7th
PAY: $10/HR
HOURS: 40/WK M-F Typically 8AM-5PM
LOCATION: 1800 North Mason Road Katy, TX 77449

Goals and Objectives:
Gain understanding of financial areas and their impact on the organization such as Payroll, Treasury, Finance and Planning, Loss Prevention, Inventory Control and Internal Audit.

Some Responsibilities:
  •        Create task specs, including what should be accomplished and risks being addressed
  •        Assist with roll-out and documentation of accounts payable, travel and expense, tax filing, reconciliations etc.
  •        Work with imaging consultants
  •        Assist with product category mapping and IT implementation from a tax perspective
  •        Assist in the research needed to complete the product classification

Beta Alpha Psi and Deloitte & Touche, LLP Present:

Beta Alpha Psi and Deloitte & Touche have teamed up again for Launch. This event is geared to improve interview and communication skills for Junior and Senior level students who will be interviewing during this Spring semester for internships and full-time positions.
 
Launch will be held Wednesday, February 18th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the Rockwell Room, located upstairs in the library.
Beta Alpha Psi & PPA students are invited to participate in this event. The event includes formal interviewing sessions and mix and mingle activities designed to further develop students’ communication skills.
 
Attendees should dress in business attire to get the most out of the event.  Also, please bring copies of your resume and business cards for distribution to the Deloitte interviewers.  Students should treat this event as real as possible by doing research and preparation work before the event.  Come to the event with a job position in mind and how one would approach interviewing for that position.

Please note that this event is to aid those who are new to interviewing or are in need of improved interviewing skills.  Therefore, if you have already secured a position, please allow a student who can better benefit from the event to have the seat.
