Master's Program in Accounting (MPA) FAQ's

Applying

How do I check on the status of my application?

Decisions are not made until the file is complete in the MPA Office. Students may contact the MPA Advisor via email at mpa@uh.edu to check on the status of their application. Once the file is complete and a decision is made, the student will be notified by mail regarding the decision.

What are the guidelines for recommendation letters?

We do not have a standard form for recommendation letters. Recommendation letters should come from someone who knows you well enough to explain why you would be a good candidate for the MPA. It can be from the academic or professional area. Recommendation letters can be submitted by the applicant or the referral source. Letters do not need to be in a sealed envelope, but should be on letterhead and signed.

Transcripts

I can't obtain my official undergraduate transcripts. What should I do?

Bauer College cannot waive this requirement, nor will it review applications without official transcripts.

If I graduated from the main UH-campus, will I need to submit transcripts?

No. We will be able to obtain degree confirmation and grade information for students who graduated from this campus.

Must I submit a transcript from EVERY institution I've ever attended, including those where I participated in summer programs and semesters abroad?

Yes. However, if coursework that you took outside of your degree granting institution already appears on the transcript, it will not be necessary to submit the transcripts from the other school.

Transcripts from my undergraduate institution are not in English. What should I do?

You must have your transcripts translated into English by a U.S. translator approved by the Office of International Admissions. Please contact one of the following companies:

GMAT

Can the GMAT be waived?

No. This requirement is never waived. In addition, GMAT scores older than five years will not be accepted. There are no exceptions.

What are the minimum acceptable GPA and GMAT scores?

The MPA is looking for a 550 or above on the GMAT and a 3.0 or above GPA (final 60 semester hours or final 90 quarter hours of earned degree). For students who have already earned a Master’s degree, this will be the primary GPA used in the decision. International students: GPA will be calcuated based on your entire undergraduate coursework.

If I take the GMAT more than once, are my scores averaged?

No. The admissions decision will be based on your highest score.

I've taken the GMAT more than once. Can I submit components from various testing dates?

No. Component GMAT scores, including verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing assessment tests, must be reported from the same date. While the Pearson report contains all of your scores, Bauer College will focus on the best.

What if my official GMAT scores, including the AWA, arrive after the deadline?

If the scores arrive shortly after the deadline, this will be fine as long as the test was taken before the deadline.

How do I get more information on the GMAT?

Information about the GMAT can be found at www.mba.com.

TOEFL/IELTS

Is the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) required?

Yes, if you earned your undergraduate degree outside the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, English-speaking Canada or the United Kingdom, regardless of whether the program you attended was conducted in English.  TOEFL/IELTS scores may not be more than 2 years old.  These tests are waived for applicants who earned a high school diploma or a bachelor's degree or higher in the U.S.

What must I score on the TOEFL or IELTS to be considered?

TOEFL scores above 620 on the paper-based test, 260 on the computer-adapted test, 105 for the internet-based or IELTS scores above 7.5 are required as they enhance your chances of success with the Bauer College's rigorous reading, writing, and class discussion requirements.

FYI: A computer-based TOEFL score of 260 is analogous to 620 on the paper-based test.

Must I also take the Test of Written English (TWE)?

It is not required for admission.

Although my education was completed overseas, I am now a U.S. citizen, so will UH waive the TOEFL/IELTS?

No, unless you meet the conditions outlined above. Whether you are a U.S. citizen (or permanent resident) is not the issue. You must take the TOEFL or IELTS unless you have completed a previous degree in an English-speaking country.

If I take the TOEFL or IELTS more than once, are my scores averaged?

No. We consider only your highest score. You may take the test as many times as you like.

How do I get more information about the TOEFL or IELTS?

Further information about the TOEFL can be found at www.toefl.org. Information about the IELTS can be found at www.ielts.org.

Experience & Degrees

How important is my work experience to your decision?

While your work experience will be taken into consideration for the admissions decision, it is not required.

Must I have an undergraduate degree to enter the graduate program?

Yes, you must have a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university, if you received your education in the United States. If you are an international applicant, your undergraduate degree must be the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree. If you have completed a three-year Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree from India or Pakistan, we also require that you have completed the Master of Commerce (M.Com) degree or similar post-graduate degree.

What undergraduate major is required?

No particular undergraduate major is required in order to pursue the MPA. However, students who do not have a BBA in Accounting from an AACSB accredited university will have additional requirements to take.

Can I apply to the program without having completed the prerequisite or foundation courses?

Yes. You can still apply to the MPA without having completed these courses. However, any prerequisite or foundation course not previously completed will become part of your program requirements.
